Several schools on D’s list allow her to submit a video in place of coming to the campus. Since we are on the west coast, this is much more preferable to flying all over the country. We were thinking of attending Chicago Unifieds but being out of school for a week is really risky at her HS. LA Unifieds would be much better but not all schools attend LA. So…does anyone have any thoughts about submitting video auditions for those schools that don’t come to LA? She’s also considering sending in a video audition to Oklahoma City.
I think it depends on the school. And the person auditioning. I do know there is at least one student in Ds class at OCU that submitted her audition by video. She is an exceptional talent. So it is a good example that people do it and are accepted there. But it is not a large number. It may depend on how well you feel you will come across on video.
There are always extenuating circumstances. People who are a very far distance from the school make more sense to audition by video than people who could theoretically travel there for the audition. And schools who don’t attend Unified auditions but accept videos may be more understanding than those who make an effort to travel the country to make their auditions accessible.
I have seen where schools will open up video auditions in the case of really severe weather which forces travel plans to be cancelled or changed. I do not know what success rate the students who ended up doing this had. And there is probably no way of knowing whether their outcome changed because they auditioned by video instead of in person. But it was good that at least the schools acknowledged the weather issues and allowed them to audition by video when they couldn’t make their in-person scheduled audition.
One of the downsides of video auditions is there is no way for auditors to work with you if they hear or see something they don’t like and want to see if you can make the adjustment. And there is no way for them to ask questions of you or see what your personality is like face to face. I also wonder if they give those who made the effort to audition in person more weight than those who don’t. I honestly don’t know and it probably varies from school to school and the level of talent displayed in the video.
One upside is you can record as many takes as you like until you get it just the way you want instead of having one shot in a live audition.
@vvnstar -I was just going to mention that I know it does happen because my D’s friend was accepted to OCU’s MT class this year on a video audition. (Must be talking about the same person)
My D was accepted to a school last year via a video audition (that she didn’t end up choosing to attend), but I know it’s kind of a crap shoot.
We also lived a plane ride from most places. Our plan was to schedule some of the video option ones later so if in desperation we had time to book flights or if she had some acceptances she could send a video or cancel if needed.
My D is auditioning this year & we may consider a video to one school that is far away. The person there said they understand& this school also doesn’t offer many audition dates so I’m thinking if def depends on the school
