I saw that CU released a video about "basic tips for new students" called QuickTour. I watched it and man was it cheesy ..... this section of the video was the worst. Cornell University :: New Students :: First-Year :: Cornell Quick Tour I hope orientation week won't be like this. I hope my OL won't be preaching to me about being a good boy because "the community cares". Tell me that the students leading orientation won't be scripted by administrators like the students in the video. I don't want to spend a week living in that video.

what was your giant problem with it? I honestly don't understand what irked you so much.

If you didn't learn/take anything out of it, fine, but some people require it to be spelled out for them like that in order to not do stupid things.

We're all glad you are already independent enough to know right from wrong on your own.

Orientation is a week?

Yeah, I mean, I won't lie; I thought it was cheesy too. But so what? Just be grateful that they made these videos. Not a lot of people would volunteer to spend their time doing something nice like that.

..and all the OLs are volunteering too. I'm pretty sure they're not getting paid..so like I said before, be grateful.

You had a problem with this video???...wow!!!
Hopefully by the time you graduate from Cornell, you won't have a problem with these kinds of videos!

don't get me wrong, I am grateful that OLs volunteer to help new students and for the volunteers in this video. As volunteers I'm sure that they are eager to help. I'm just wondering how much influence the administration imposes on OLs. (i.e. mandating that OLs discuss silly things like the caring community)

I agree that the video was a nice gesture, I'm wondering how representative the scripting of the students in the video is of orientation week activities.

I don't have a problem with the video ...... I just didn't like it so much ... its a short internet video and as such its a few minutes of my time that I may stop as I please ... but I am thinking this could represent a week of cheesy scripted orientation events, which I would have a problem with.

@agbm

Just about.

From friday to wednesday.

Ah, don't worry Nesquik. I've seen multiple times on this board that orientation week will be one of the best weeks we have at Cornell

Discussing community bondage and bias is hardly a cheesy topic.

Btw, orientation is not only about reminding students of their responsibilities as Cornell students; orientation week also includes many activites for students to mingle with each other and make new friends and hopefully for students to find ways to interaact and contribute to the community!

Just to add, orientation week is one of the best weeks for majority of Cornell students!

I agree that community bondage is important, its the medium that I find cheesy. I don''t think that an orientation video is the appropriate place to bring this up. Bonds (esp. deep bonds) are often unspoken and (IMO) any attempt to describe them in a simple video doesn't recognize the complexity of a community relationship.

But this is a separate issue. with this thread, I was just trying to figure out how representative the video was of orientation.

Great to hear. I'll be looking forward to it.

OLs are pretty chill, at least mine was, and I was when I did it last year and will be again this year. The OLs don't preach, they just acclimate you to campus and your school. Some will tell you about parties in collegetown and others will even bring you to their own parties in ctown. Some will take you gorge jumping and others will buy you alcohol. It really just depends who you get, most are chill though.

trust me if you do one ****ed up thing at cornell it will either be on the Cornell Sun or JuicyCampus...

Appreciate orientation week in all of its cheeziness...obviously it's dumb but you're a college freshman and if you just appreciate the singularity of the situation, you will have an amazing time. Make me a freshman again PLEASE.

It does help if you have a cool OL...but even without one..whatever...there has to be at least ONE cool person in your group.

Yeah, orientation week is probably one of the best weeks.

"Make me a freshman again PLEASE" - what are you - 3 years old?

Now Nesquik my friend, that's the type of people you'll meet in Ithaca. The video is really dumb, but you'll soon realize that most events held during Orientation are a little dumb. Everybody is obsessed with diversity and being politically correct and try to make all students feel the same way.

However, you should take advantage of that week, cuz it's the only time at Cornell when you don't have to go to classes and you can just make friends. After a couple of weeks, the groups of friends are already formed and it's hard to meet new people.

Email me if you need normal answers to your questions about Cornell...

cataxxx is definitely a little cynical

the video is meant to be cheesy...i do think the two hosts did a wonderful job though...
