Videogames + Personal Statement?

My gpa is decent 3.7, and my ACT is decent as well but they are lower than the average for USC. Its because of my passion for videogames that I've never really tried hard in school. I keep researching them and playing them and at this point I've decided I wanted to go in the gaming business. Would it be wise to write a personal statement to describe my passion of videogames? or should I do the typical "how I survived through a tough time"?

I want to go to USC because it is the top in getting a videogame degree.
Also I have a butt load of Extra curriculars and I'm taking the ACT which will hopefully be on average with USC.

Heh…I can say for sure that most people wouldn’t think that’s a good idea. Some people were a bit surprised when I wrote one of my Personal Statements on Anime. I have yet to find out whether or not that’s a bad thing, but personally, I wouldn’t want to accept them if they don’t accept me for it. ( = v = )

Still, your not really trying hard in school is pretty worrisome. There’s still the general courses to take, and if your passion for video games gets in the way of that in college, that will definitely be a problem. As a result, the colleges would be wary of accepting you.

But if you’re passionate about it, I’d say go for it. “How I survived through a tough time” is typical, but if it’s genuine, that’s fine too. The way you phrased it though, implies that you really don’t want to, so you really just might as well stick with writing about video games.

As for your “butt load of Extra curriculars,” it’s quality over quantity. A laundry list of extracurriculars really doesn’t help much if you’re not actually dedicated to them.

And now you should wait for other people’s opinions. They might totally negate everything I say.

I picked up the slack senior year with a 4.0 each of the two terms with 2 AP classes along with my EC’s. Call me a late bloomer, but I actually only want 4.0’s or higher now because I have the potential (despite my laziness). Video games wont get in the way of college.

As for EC’s i’m super dedicated to doing them. They may not prestigious but most of them are me playing bass guitar for someone, like church, and soccer (but I have others).

I would go for whatever tells your story better. If the “tough time” is something that is just stretched out to make some farfetched “I realized blah blah blah insert generic life lesson” go with video games. I wrote about how I really loved manga in the additional essay for most schools. I was the only one in my school even waitlisted to princeton (val didn’t apply and got to harvard but w/e…I technically didn’t have any spike or anything and had subpar ECs…my essays were beast though).

That being said, it really has to pack a punch.
