how were we suppose to sign up for the vietnamese placement exam? I emailed the director but I never got a reply back. Is it okay if we just show up for the exam?

blink,

i believe you can just walk in to the exam date (sept 29th 3pm-5pm). in my case, i can't make it because of class so i emailed the director and this is his reply:

Greetings and welcome to UCLA. Although the placement in class is for students who have enrolled in the class through provisional self-placement, feel free to take your placement test with them if that is the only time you are free. Let the instructor there know that you are not enrolled but wish to join the Vietnamese program. You may take the test in either section of 50D (50 A is strictly for non-heritage learners).

what is provisional self placement? whats the difference in concepts for the heritage and non heritage class? so lets say i wanted to take the language beginning winter quarter, do i have to take the placement exam on the 29th or can i wait until winter quarter?

well...this is strictly off the top of my head...

provisional self-placement just means that the students have enrolled in the level of vietnamese they feel like they belong in (prior to actually taking the placement exam).

as for heritage vs. non heritage, i can't tell you how the class will differ...but if you're trying to decide what track to pursue, heritage students are generally considered to be raised in families in which the language is spoken enough to the point that they generally understand (or can even speak) the language (but can't really read/write it)....basically, heritage students are to some degree bilingual...so based off of that, i would think the heritage track moves along more quickly?/emphasizes more writing and reading...but again, not sure.

as for the last question, yes you should take the placement exam this fall since the vietnamese placement exam is only offered once a year in the fall and you need the results of the test to be allowed to enroll in the vietnamese series

I enrolled in 50D (the heritage class), and I'm pretty sure I belong in this level so hopefully they won't demote me to the intro class or something. Do I still need to take the placement test? My speaking is much stronger than my written/reading (as I'm sure most natives are).

4pointer: SEASIAN 50D is only offered during fall quarter - you cannot start it in winter quarter.

bfired2: You can talk to your instructor about this. Yes, you can bypass the exam if s/he gives you permission.

but where is the exam being held?

it's still TBA as of right now...

does anyone know where the placement exam is being held tomorrow? how hard is it to pass out of these exams and fulfill the foreign lang requirement?

Thats the information I got. See you guys there.

If you can't make it to that one (like me), you can go to one of the lectures instead to take the exam.

I just finished it...it was a lot easier than I thought, but it was really loud and hectic. There were a few things I was unfamiliar with, like the technical terms for tenses, but other than that, it was okay. Hopefully, I don't get placed into the advanced, but I don't think that will happen. How did you guys do? We get the results on Wednesday, btw.

ok scratch my post above since the exams weren't even given during the lectures...

...but i agree..the test wasn't bad at all...no essay to write. i think i passed out.

it was really annoying though, how people kept asking stupid questions. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. bad name for vietnamese people.

agree

I probably got like 20% to 30% of it right, lets hope I don't get put into intermediate. I left sections A and B blank pretty much, and F as well, but I did okay on the tenses and the one where you could write in english.

at first he said 55% to pass out and i got happy but then after he said 90%. blah!

so they're not offering an other placement exam on campus till next year?

correct, unless you're enrolled in a vietnamese 50A/50D class this quarter in which case you can take the test tomorrow in class.

what about going to the discussion and telling the teacher you had scheduling conflicts and weren't able to make the friday test.
