Hey everyone! I committed to Villanova and just got off the waitlist at umichigan and I have no idea what to do. Is Michigan really that much better than nova? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
paging Alexandre. Alexandre please pick up the white courtesy phone
They are both fine schools. UM is ranked a bit higher, but that is no reason to pick a college. IMO, assuming cost is not an issue at either school, it really should depend on the size of school and type of environment you think you can best thrive in. Do you prefer a mid-sized Catholic college or a huge public?
@mimimo7890 What are the cost differentials? Are you leaning toward a particular major(s)?
Cost will be about the same. I am completely undecided and am thinking umich might be better for that since they have so many more liberal arts majors than nova @wayneandgarth also i love your username lol
Read up on the housing at both. There was a thread about Villanova housing (or one that mentioned it) not too long ago.
Michigan has the rep edge, but that should only be used as a tiebreaker IMO. Check to see which school has more majors and classes you might like, how difficult it is to get into them, etc.
@prezbucky im actually kind of confused with housing at umich. Is it only guaranteed freshman year?
@mimimo7890 It is guaranteed freshmen year but if you choose to stay in dorm for sophomore and later years, you are very likely to get one too. Around 95% of freshmen live in dorm and the remaining are mostly commute students. For returned students, you will get a random priority order. If you get a lower priority, you may not find the room type or location you want. As off campus (actually on campus but not under the university) housing are available but needs almost a year in advance to apply. So it is not possible for freshmen unless you live a bit farther away from campus.
I would lean to Michigan. It will have largely more accomplished students to be around, higher rated academics across more liberal art subjects and Ann Arbor is a great college town which you will greatly enjoy.
off campus housing within a short walking distance is really pretty easy to find in Ann Arbor.
Ann Arbor is a much nicer college town, has an amazing sports scene, and has far more cultural events than Villanova. If you like a big city Philly is a short hop away, so that may affect your choice.
Both schools have great school spirit, dedicated alums. Mich with stronger rep nationally, esp internationally. Biggest issue is “big” (Mich) vs “mid” (Nova).
