Does anybody know approximately how many finalists there are for the Villanova Scholarship? I received a letter in the mail today telling me I am a finalist and will need to do a required alumni interview. I know that approximately 1200 students receive the award, but I just wanted to see how many people would be interviewing.
I also applied for the Presidential Scholarship, does anybody know when we will receive any more information about that?
The Presidential Scholarship Committee will review applications and announce Presidential Scholarship Finalists during the week of January 26. Applicants can view their status (Finalist, Non-finalist) on myNOVA during the week of January 26.
Then -
Presidential Scholarship Finalists are required to attend the interviews on campus from Sunday, February 15 through Tuesday, February 17. Finalists are expected to stay on campus for the entire three days.
Does anyone know what the 3 day on campus interview is like? Aside from being interviewed, what do the finalists do? Are they expected to make any kind of presentation or anything?
My son is a finalist…but didn’t bother to tell me until I asked after reading this thread. His letter says that his interviewer will contact him. Is that what everyone’s letter says?
Congrats on your VS. I’m feeling very disenfranchised about Villanova, since my child, who jumped through the hoops applying for the Presidential Scholarship, did not receive one of the 1200 VS. Stats: top 5% of HS class, 34 ACT, 95-96 un-weighted average, lots of college and AP courses with score of 5, full time year round both high school sports and music, lead in Wind Ensemble, lots of charity and leadership, also holds a job. Admitted to honor’s program at BC Business school, half tuition scholarship at Bentley, and many more substantial offers. I can understand the PS, but not even making the cut for the 1200+ Villanova Scholarship? Oh well…Thank God for options.
It’s actually the cost of VU rather than the absence of the Villanova Scholarship that is disconcerting- ha! Congratsto all those who are receiving a discount!
Learners, There were actually 1200 + applicants for 18 Presidential Scholarships. I’m not sure how many finalists there were (my guess would be 36-50), but there are not 1200 Presidential Scholarships. I will say, I think that 8 essay questions is excessive for this scholarship application!
Hi, Collegebound. Yes, there were 1281 applicants for the Presidential Scholarship with only 18 selected, like you said. On top of that, Villanova offers 1200+ “Villanova (merit) Scholarships” that average $5,000 each. I realize everyone who gets accepted is in the top 5% of their class and it’s very competitive. That PS application process took its toll. The rest of our children will not repeat the process. Live and learn, right?
Hi Learners. Oops I didn’t realize you were talking about a different scholarship. Were the Villanova Scholarships granted automatically with admission, or did that have a separate application like the Presidential Scholarship? My son knew the PS was a longshot, but seriously…8 essays? They should have had enough information from the original application without needing 8 additional essays! (particularly because there are only 18!) In any event this college application/scholarship process has been very eye-opening to say the least.
@Learners, I am with you… my son didn’t receive a letter either. If they award over 1241 Villanova Scholarships to a targeted freshman class of 1670 students, meaning almost 75% of the incoming class, how is it our kids were not selected for interviews if they met or exceeded all of the stated requirements and were good enough to be accepted EA? Doesn’t smell right to me. My son, although nominated for the Presidential Scholarship, did not apply for the same reasons some have already stated here - too many essays for too slim a chance of receiving the scholarship. Merely smart decision making on his part as to where to spend his time (writing essays for regular decision applications elsewhere). However, if that was a requirement for the Villanova Scholarship, it should have been stated as such. Otherwise, I can’t see how our kids weren’t even invited for interviews. Really disappointing. Kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth about Villanova…
My kid applied RD and she is interviewing for a Villanova scholarship (didn’t make the cut for Presidential although she was nominated).
Where did you get the 1241 awarded VS? I’d be surprised if they awarded that many.
