Villanova vs. BC

“I thought that BC was pretty stuck up on itself. It isn’t Georgetown or Notre Dame though it seems to think it is.”

No truer words have been spoken.

i made a bc vs. nova choice and i am content. i’m a suburban girl at heart and it’s basically my home away from home. the only times i think back on my decision is in regards to the convenience of visiting close friends in boston. rising chemist, that quote is very, very true.

@OP

I have kids at both BC and Villanova. If you want more information regarding my impressions of both schools for comparison purposes, along with my kids’ opinions and why they came to the attendance decisions they did, PM me.

Regarding the landscaping, it is beautiful. When we visited the school in the spring, we enjoyed the colors and artful arrangements of the impatiens and begonias. The lawns were well manicured and green. In the fall, we saw mums and the leaves turning colors on the many types of trees throughout campus. We’ve visited over 20 different colleges over the years, and Villanova holds its own with any of them as far as campus aesthetics are concerned.

The design and condition of the buildings also was not an issue for us. I could name a few schools where it was, however.

Some buildings are older but are generally well maintained , other facilities are newer and are beautiful like Driscoll Hall (Nursing ) and Bartley Hall (Business).
I am a fan of both Nova & BC. If you have a choice between the 2 , you have a good problem.

Villanova opened the Davis Center for Athletics and Fitness Nov. 2007.

This state-of-the-art building features practice and training facilities for the basketball programs, as well as a fitness center for the entire campus community.

Amen to that. Each of my kids is extremely happy where they are. You simply can’t go wrong with either school.

Villanova and BC are very similar. Villanova is somewhat landlocked and doesn’t have a very good college town area (you have to take the train to go ANYWHERE). Boston College isn’t too much better, but it has a few stores. Nova has a great basketball team. Can’t think of many other differences.

I just got into BC today, but forgot my Villanova ID and password. Stupid. lol

Disclaimer: S at Nova &loves it. I loved BC but S waitlisted. I too actually thought the Nova campus could use some sprucing up. I thought it was a little gritty in a real world way; which I liked. A few colleges we saw with gorgeous campuses, in an overmanicured kind of way, kind of makes me a little suspect. I don’t want it to be a country club experience. This is somewhere in between.

The dorms were fine, although I would like to see the entrances cleaned up. Better trash cans; cleaner windows, get rid of crudy newspaper, cheap receptcles. I was surprised to see so many cigarette butts on the ground. I think they just need a clean up the cigarette butt campaign… (they’re gross & it encourages smoking) My son sees none that. The overall space layout is nice and as mentioned before they’re on a 10 year strategic plan to improve the University campus.

To counter cwjthree -S said friends at BC freshman yr were not having any fun. They were just hanging out in dorm rooms on weekends. Also ridiculously strict - 3 strike rule which kids rack up pretty quickly. So I think both colleges tie in that category although Nova has a few frats which fr. boys can eventually get admitted to their parties. BC does not. Apparently since there are no BC house parties, the upper classmen go to the bars exclusively, which is the social scene. I could be wrong.

One more + +, communication from the University (departments & President) to parents is excellent. You do get the sense of sending your child to a welcoming community with great values & spirituality…

Hi Kelly37 - a year later… can you offer us some current differences between Nova and BC. Which Dorms are better? The dining Hall at BC was awesome…how is the Nova Dining options? Thanks

All i can say on the topic is that BC is a tougher admit- I was accepted to VSB, but flat out rejected from BC. But i believe that they are close enough in academic quality that opportunities are definitely not closed off by choosing one over the other.

Villanova vs Bentley University anyone?

I agree that BC is a tougher admit than Villanova , but VSB ranked #7 vs BC ranked #16 in Business Week 2011 for undergraduate business.
