So my D was accepted to both Villanova and Providence EA undecided Liberal Arts and Sciences. Villanova is her top choice however they offered no Merit scholarship. Providence did offer her a 40% off tuition and the Honors Program. Does anyone have any advice on which way to go from past experience ? I would love for her to attend her #1 but the difference in tuition is a major factor. Thanks.
Villanova is a very “preppy”, homogeneous, religious, suburban college with many affluent students. If that’s what she wants she will love it. It has a great local reputation. I know nothing of Providence.
Since money is a factor I will admit I don’t think Villanova is worth the cost for the return.
So that’s about 80k over 4 years? I can’t see a reason to pick Nova.
Providence is a very fine school with a legitimate Honors program.
Both Providence and Villanova are Catholic schools but neither are particularly “religious”.
Had your question been about the business schools the answer wouldnt be so straight forward. Nova has a national footprint in business.
They both have great locations. Villanova is near Bryn Mawr and Haverford and the surrounding towns have wonderful dowtowns. The train to Philly is about 30 minutes. Providence is in town.in a student friendly small city.
Providence is an excellent school, with a very good honors program. Can you write a check for $63K+ each year with no pain? I cannot see any reason to pay $20K more per year for Villanova. (and I do like Villanova - it is a very good school as well) Has your daughter visited Providence? Even if she has, plan on attending their Family Day April 16.
Congratulations on her acceptances.
We are scheduled to visit for Family Day. Have not been there yet but have been to Villanova twice.
@mcomom2 - that is good. Given your daughter has not yet seen the school, it is understandable that she has not yet been able to fully evaluate it. They really do a great job with kids at Providence, turning out very fine, young adults - who graduate and get jobs. Demographically, the student body has a similar feel to Villanova, though, and this is my opinion only, Providence is a little bit more down to earth.
Villanova is a very good school. My personal opinion is that Providence is every bit as good a school.
Good luck to you and your daughter as you navigate the decision process.
I think all you can do now is see how the visit goes and take it from there.
I have a friend that has sent 3 children to Providence and they all have had great experiences.
If you can write the check to Nova, and it’s first choice, do it.
But Honors program at PC is a great fall back option at a 40% discount.
@canals68 This was for last year’s admission cycle. I believe the OP’s D ended up at Fordham.
Please don’t post to old threads. This was asked last admissions cycle.
