Villanova

I have about a 3.7 goal on the 4.0 scale. I’ve taken about 4-5 AP classes in high school as well as 1 honors class. I have multiple extra curriculars including sports, clubs, jobs, and community service. On the new SAT I have an overall score of 1170 out of 1600. On the ACT I scored a 25. My rank is 37 out of 120 kids give or take 5. What are my chances of getting accepted to Villanova?

This should be posted in the Villanova forum, but I’ll answer here before a mod moves it.

First of all, have you met their requirements for admission? Nova requires 4 years of english, math and science, which is pretty rigorous.

The SAT scores of admitted students (25th to 75th percentile) are 1200-1400. You are below the 25th percentile, meaning your chances are extremely low (considering Villanova ranks test scores as “very important” in admissions). You’re also below the 25th percentile for ACT.

Only about 20.9% of applicants with a GPA similar to yours got admitted.

Overall, I think you have a very low chance. Your stats probably aren’t up to par with what nova wants. Of course it is a holistic school and you will have essays and recs, but stats are the first thing most admission officers look at.

OP: @yonceonhismouth is citing this info http://www1.villanova.edu/content/villanova/enroll/statreports/_jcr_content/pagecontent/download/file.res/CDS_2015-2016_v2.pdf

These standardized docs exist for every school you’re considering and section C gives you a snapshot of admitted students.

However, if I can correct something – “Only about 20.9% of applicants with a GPA similar to yours got admitted” is incorrect. The CDS says 20.9% of the admitted freshman pool had GPA between 3.50 and 3.74 (p.9).

A total of 16,202 student applied and 7761 were admitted for an admit rate of 47.9%. The data does not disclose the actual admit rate for students with your GPA. It’d be safe to assume that it’s much less than 47.9% however.

@T26E4 is correct- I stated it a little weirdly. There isn’t an admit rate for your exact GPA, but you are in that cohort of 3.5-3.74.

@T26E4 thank you!

Just in case Nova is no go, what do like about it? Size? Location? Catholic school? Considering any similar schools?

Nova winning the NCAA made applications rise? Anybody know by how much?

Villanova won the championship months after the application deadline, so it had zero effect on number of applicants. It likely had a positive effect on yield

@PetulaClark I like the size and athletics as well as the prestigious name. Are there any other schools similar to this you could think of?

@GPELLE Depends on what part of USA you prefer. But before school reputation and athletics, first two factors need to be: where are my GPA/SAT/class rigor/etc, and what you and family can afford.

@GPELLE You could look at the USNews lists of universities and the one for colleges. Maybe ones ranked 50 to 100. Their rankings are not without a lot of faults but can give a general range. Many of the colleges are test optional, so an ACT that is low relative to GPA will not have to be submitted. Those schools look at your GPA, course rigor (your APs for example), letters of recommendation, etc.

Villanova reports their 25th percentiles as
GPA: 3.9
ACT: 31
SAT: 1340

So I think it is safe to say it is a high reach
