Violin Supplement to Application

Hey I'm a serious violinist, although I don't want to do a music major. However, I love my music and some of the colleges I'm applying to (ND, W&M) allow a music/creative supplement to the application. Has anyone here ever done something along the lines of this? I think music is probably my strongest EC, so I'd like the colleges I apply to see the level I've reached.

Take a look in here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/738525-how-strong-music-ec.html</a>. I posted a few links to other supplement question threads throughout, and I know there’s a few towards the thread’s end.

Searching for (music or artistic) supplement as your keyword will bring up dozens of threads.

Everything you need or want to know is there.

I assume you’re talking about preparing and sending in for the admission next cycle.

OP, what are the last few pieces you’ve played?

DD submitted a violin supplement as part of last year’s admission follies. We have a family friend with some recording background, and were able to work with DD’s violin teacher to record outtakes during a rehearsal for a recital. The process went smoothly, and I am sure it made a difference in showing another facet. DD sent a CD along with her applications to top-tier liberal arts and a couple of Ivies. She did not receive any specific feedback, though one school’s evaluator wrote a kind note complimenting her piano playing (note that she plays violin). We forwarded that positive feedback to her accompanist.

As you pull these together, keep in mind that these materials are sent to the music department for evaluation; consequently, the submission dates may precede the deadlines for other application materaials. Each school may also have specific requirements for content, e.g., <10 minutes and excerpts that show lyrical as well as technical expertise. Pay close attention to the school’s admissions site to confirm you’ve addressed all the required elements.
