violin whizzes????

has anyone gotten into NY All-State for violin before?
wat piece did you play and what'd u get for NYSSMA?
I'm playing Bruch's Concerto in G Minor 1st Movement.. what do u think i should get for NYSSMA to get into All-State?
thanks =)

i was under the impression the audition repertoire was predetermined... that said, the bruch concerto in g minor is played by almost every violinist... altho i have chosen to forego it god knows why  might i recommend a showy less often played piece...? weiniawski scherzo - tarantelle

Bruch is plenty showy. I don't remember there being a cadenza in that movement, though; I'd pick a piece that had one so that you may be able to show your interpretation of it.

i'm not saying the bruch isn't showy, which it isn't really when you compare it with technical marvels like the brahms... sibelius... tchaikovsky etc. i was just saying that everyone plays it, maybe he could play a different piece to wow the judges

yup. i got into NY all state. and All-eastern orchestra. =) i really dont think nyssma is hard. You just gotta show the judge that you enjoy playing music =). sight reading is bs. just make ur piece good.

i'll see you next year at all state! =D oh yeah. what county do u live? cuz thats makes the biggest difference...they tend to pick people from long island and upper state new york rather than like queens...a ton of my friends who really should have gotten in didnt cuz their schools were in queens.

oh yeah. u should get 100 if u want to be secure for all-state. They guarentee alternate status if u get 100, and they determine who gets into the orchestra by ranking you by your judge's comments. I think the only thing that matters with pieces is if you like the music and if u can display that onto the judge.

what? ***... nj must be hella hard then... i was over 100 when i did it, but i wasn't even close to making it

uuhh...u got a score over 100 when the range is 0-100?

i live in westchester county and is there any chance i could get in with like a 98 or 99?

=( sorry....probally not....even ppl with 100s are not guarenteed a seat in the orchestra... theyre guarenteed an alternate status....but you still have a chance next year! =D

nooo... in nj, the score goes upto 140 i believe... 100 pts for the solo 20 pts each for scales and sightreading...

does it count as being a violin wizz if u can play two pieces, but REALLY REALLY well (never mind that they are "mary had a little lamb" and "farmer bob went to market")???

lol claudeDebussy, it's alrite haha, but i'm sorry i don't think that counts... ur getting there tho ;)

lol, its a joke kujjies, i dont even play violin, as you'll learn from other posts im a pianist

ahh, the sn should've given it away!

indeed, ur not up on your French impressionists, by the sound of it cujjy!

i played Max Bruch concerto for the all-state orchestra in Cali.
i got rejected. hope that helps.. lolz.

see??? not flashy enough lol... i played the mendelssohn 3rd... for jersey, apparantly i was the only one who did, but i didn't get in!

how long you guys been playing violin?
i was in my 12th year when i did Bruch.. i guess its not fancy enough. and i didnt play it cleanly either.. so eh heh. heh.

i'm in my 10th year... and i'm working on the mendelssohn right now, i can "hack" through the bruch, but never formally learned it
