while ive got a thread started, how are the courses at UVM? small/large , discussion/lecture.

VIP application still exists. My son received information on it via email and regular mail. How do they determine who gets the VIP app? My son had never even considered the school but now he is thinking of applying since it is a short app and free!

hmmm...my scores are higher then the lowest i have seen to recieve a VIP app in the past, and i am actually interested in UVM, but i guess they dont want me, lol.

We are out state. Maybe the VIP is only for out of state kids.

im also out of state

hey yeah i got that too, I'm from connecticut and i'm assuming it's just from test scores/ out of stateness. i'm thinking it's a good idea to apply early so i'm sure of at least one college by december. but i don't know anything about the school-- is it good?

i have no personal knowledge about the school, but am doing some "hand-holding" of a friend of mine. his first is there, and not too happy. i started a thread about her miserable experiences being placed in the dorm called Mercy Hall. from what i know, it's a good place if you can ski, really cold (my friend said it'll be -10 in winter) with large classes and a very "hippie" environment. hope this helps!

thanks... and no i can't ski, but i guess i can learn if i must!

MY daughter applied to the Univ of Vermont 2 years ago using the VIP application. She got in but went somewhere else. Anyways, I think they got her name from the summer tour we took the summer before senior year. They asked her rank and GPA. She had to fill out a card. The got part about the VIP application is if you complete it right away, the school get back to you quickly.. My D knew you was in by the middle of October, which really took the pressure of getting into college off.

My d also got into UVM via the VIP application. A number of her friends did, too, and three are there right now and quite happy. (We didn't visit before applying, so we don't know how they got her name.) She also got into the Honors program, which has its own new dorms in the middle of campus - no problem like happycollegemom's friend is experiencing.

It was her second choice among all her acceptances.

My daughter just started there also and applied via the VIP application. She had not been there either prior to receiving the application so I'm not sure how her name was obtained. She, as a freshman, has one class with 15 students, two with 30 and two with 75. She is quite happy. (So far anyway!) I'm not sure about the "hippie" environment. I didn't see anything different from any other college campus we visited! It is certainly a beautiful place.

I just got an email from them about it. I filled out my VIP application in literally 5 minutes. I never though of applying there until this. Hell it is free, why not. I will probably get rejected but whatever.

My son also got a VIP application. I'm not sure how they got his name. His SAT scores are average but his GPA is good. Don't know how they would have gotten his GPA without any application. My son is a golfer. Vermont is in the opposite direction of all the schools he's looked at. He has a hard time tolerating Connecticut winters. To him, Vermont is like the North Pole. No chance of him going to UVM. Good luck to all!

"i have no personal knowledge about the school...from what i know...hope this helps!"

No, happycollegemom, actually, it doesn't help.

Please keep in mind that the whole point of coming to this forum - especially for the kids - is to learn from people who either have some direct experience or some facts, not from hearsay.

no need to be so antagonistic! i spent WEEKS calming down my good friend regarding detailed events told him by his daughter, a freshman at UVM. of course it's not hearsay!! he showed me actual communications from the school responding to his worries about safety, dorm isolation, and no cafeteria. (see my note re. Mercy Hall if you like.)i have other friends whose kids , evnthough they loved to ski, got bummed by the cold and long winter. i PERSONALLY haven't attended, nor have my children attended UVM, and i say that as a way of clarification. that does not mean, however that i am ignorant of certain issues. i am extremely aware that this forum is for the kids and that is my sole purpose for being here. my own are in or done(thank god!)

So what are trhe GPAs and SAT scores of kids that received this VIP application?

i was wondering that too...i got national merit in ny and then >2300 on regular sat but no vip app for me - i had to pay my $45 with the common app

My ds recv'd the VIP app and applied. He took both the SAT and ACT. Did very well on Science portion of ACT -but average on SAT's -I called and asked admissions where the info came from for my son to get the VIP app -she told me "standardized testing scores" that is all she would say. I think that it must have been ACT. Their marketing worked, as he applied -heck it was free! He will visit if accepted, and consider attending.. if the 1st choice doesn't come through.

I received a handful of waivers and special apps but not from UVM :(
There is no way to request a VIP application correct?
