Well a small envelope came from USC…looks like Alabama or Tennessee could be it…oh well

So sorry to hear that smrsson! I haven’t talked to anyone who was accepted today! There were a few other kids in our area and nobody has posted about it on facebook so I’m not thinking they got good news either. So I guess I’ll see you on the Alabama forum! Roll Tide!

I’m so sorry for those who were disappointed today. I am one of those annoying people who believes everything happens for a reason, and a door doesn’t close without a window (at least) opening somewhere. I pray that your kids will end up in the perfect place for them.

@KarGaro, it seems odd to me that your D received a scholarship offer to Kentucky being OOS, but can’t get in regular admission to S. Carolina. Did she apply to the business school, which I know is more competitive there than other majors? Apologies if you don’t want to share, but what were her test scores and grades? My son is deciding between S. Carolina which he loved but is OOS for us, and FSU…I wish you and your D all the best no matter what, life has a way of working out!

It seems to me you have to apply early to UofSC. The ones that didn’t seemed to have a lot of trouble getting in. Maybe they met their quota?

We definitely will check out Alabama - hopefully it isn’t too late to get decent housing if he goes there. I’m still a little surprised he didn’t get at least waitlisted at USC … I have to go and check out Alabama’s forum - Roll Tide :)

Thanks for your well wishes - good luck to your son as well - I do agree…everything happens for a reason…I guess we will see what those reasons are…

CF - I agree on the early applications. Your odds go down the longer you wait, as the school fills all or most of it’s open slots, it gets that much more competitive for those remaining. Still, it appears S. Carolina had an unusually high number of applicants this year based on the stats of those getting turned down, much more so than last year.

StoneMagic - she applied to the School of Nursing at all of her schools. She did apply early. My daughter’s unweighted GPA is 3.7 and her weighted is 4.45, she took quite a few honors and AP classes. Her test scores on the other hand basically are horrible - 1050 SAT and 21 ACT. She suffers from a chronic medical condition made worse by stress and only diagnosed this winter. That is the only reason that I can think of for why she did not do well on these tests. She is in the National Honor Society and has over 300 hours of volunteer community service. She has quite a few awards and many recommendation letters. We realized going in that admissions were not going to know her and that if they just look at scores that she would have a problem. If they looked at her whole file - she should be OK. Kentucky gave her $10,000 per year. She applied to all of her schools back in October.

CFitz - I totally agree that everything happens for a reason. Thanks for your well wishes.

My daughter will be home from her class trip tonight and will hopefully have had some time to process the news and move on. I, on the other hand, am looking into making arrangements to go down to Alabama next month for cheering tryouts. Roll Tide!

KarGaro - I seriously don’t get it. While those test scores could be better, the GPA, courseload with AP/Honors and activities would appear to more than compensate for them. Don’t say this to her as she might be upset, but I seriously think if she had done the early application she would have gotten in. I am hearing buzz from colleges that applications are way up this year across the board, so it may just be one of those years when things are tight, slots are filled, and they have to be even more selective with what’s left. I believe the nursing school at SC is also hard to get in to, they have a nationally ranked reputation. It’s all good in the end and Alabama is a fine school, I went to Florida myself…

StoneMagic - she did apply Early Action and was got a letter that she was being deferred to Regular Decision and that she could submit more things to her application which she did - she had gotten into Nat. Honor Society, made the All State Team in cheering, sent mid year records, sent two new essays and three more recommendation letters and no idea what else. About 15 kids from our high school applied - 2 got in early action an the rest went into Regular Decision. 1 got waitlisted and the rest got denied. It is what it is. I’m sorry that she didn’t get in but I’ve always been a firm believer that there isn’t just one “dream” school" and I’m sure she will be happy wherever she finally decides to go (she isn’t 100% Bama today - she is thinking through her options). I also think that with the ease of applying through the internet that colleges are dealing with way more many applicants than can possibly attend their school.

Well after all he and I have done with regard to USC, my son has made the (late) decision to attend NC State. I’m a little shocked. They offered him nothing but a couple of very small grants, but apparently he really liked the campus and the ‘feel’ of the School of Engineering better there. Anyway, I wish everyone the best, and those whose kids didn’t make it in to USC, have they decided where they’ll be going yet?

CFitz, what did USC offer your son?

They offered him in-state tuition and a McKissick scholarship. Nothing huge, but it was nice to be offered that.
