Virginia & DC; My Options ?

Hello!

I'm a Hokie who wants to go to law school in Washington, DC or Virginia. Here are my stats:

B.S. Civil Engineering, Virginia Tech GPA: 3.4
LSAT: 165

Which law schools in Virginia or Washington DC do you think I could get into ? I'm new to this site and from what I've seen there are quite a few well informed posters here, so if you don't mind giving me your expert opinions I would be very happy to read your comments.

run your numbers through LSAC Data search (lsat & Gpa)

http://officialguide.lsac.org/docs/cgi-bin/home.asp

you can also try

www.lawschoolnumbers.com

where you can select schools and see registered users and how they made out at these schools

you can try this one too

http://www.bc.edu/offices/careers/gradschool/law/lawlocator/#explanation

I'm assuming that you're a VA resident, so the first two schools (as matches) that I would suggest are George Mason and William & Mary. (if you aren't a VA resident, those would be more match/reach schools for you.)

In the match/reach category, put GW and W&L.
Reach: Georgetown, UVA (maybe the engin. thing will help out; your stats aren't going to keep you out, but are on the low side for those schools)
Safeties and matches, no particular order: Richmond, American, Univ. of Maryland, Catholic, Baltimore.

If you really want the MD/DC area, those ten schools should be it. Your stats are good enough so that you would definitely be assured of some of them, maybe with money; none of them are out of your reach.

Doesn't William & Mary have the lowest acceptance rate of the Virginia and DC schools?

If I sound cranky, I mean it. I try to give people good, informed opinions, and keep uneducated half-opinions to myself. But when someone throws something out there like, "Oh, this school does this and this," it really makes my life harder if I want to ensure that posters get good information.

First of all, who gives a crap if a school has a low acceptance rate or a high acceptance rate? It's a lousy indicator of difficulty of admission. Yale's acceptance rate is relatively high, but only the super-qualified people even apply. W&M waitlists a lot of people automatically, so they cut down on the people who they accept but don't want to go there. They do accept, according to LSAC, 924 students every year.

GPA: 3.80-3.31
LSAT: 165-160.

Um, for a 3.4 student with a 165 LSAT and VA residency, that's a match.

Georgetown:
GPA: 3.80-3.42
LSAT: 170-167

Um, yeah, that's a reach for someone whose GPA is hovering around the 25th percentile and LSAT doesn't compensate, because it's lower than the 25th percentile.

GW:
GPA: 3.80-3.45
LSAT: 166-163

Wow, that looks a lot like W&M, just slightly higher LSATs.

UVA:
LSAT: 171-167
GPA: 3.83-3.53

Hum, it's probably harder to get into UVA than to get into W&M. The OP's stats are in the bottom 25th percentile for each, hence the "reach" label.

W&L:
GPA: 3.79-3.25
LSAT: 166-162

Sounds a lot like W&M, but with a slightly higher LSAT requirement.

Thanks so much for the info - it's very helpful. I am indeed a Virginia resident.

I do have a few other questions regarding Law School that I'll ask in new threads instead of loading them onto this thread.

Aries-Athena:

Sorry to "bust your chops." Just wanted to point out that W&M is equivalent to W&L and GW, and above George Mason when you really analyze things (the US News peer ranking skews popular perceptions but numbers don't lie). I concede that Georgetown and Virginia are more established and have more graduates serving as judges and partners of major firms out there.

No doubt that W&M is an excellent school; it's not UVA or G-town, though. For VA residents, it's reasonable to call W&M a match if you have a 3.4 and a 165.

You also might want to try Washington and Lee.

I'm just wondering, what is a "hokie" ?

Red and orange. Nerdy. Found in the Shenandoah Valley. Mortal enemy of the Cavalier... a "Hokie" is a VA Tech student. :)

Main Entry: hokie
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: an emasculated turkey
