Virginia Private College Week

Private College Week is coming up again, July 31 -- August 5

[quote]
During Virginia Private College Week (PCW), the 24 members of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) with undergraduate programs will host two daily Open House programs for prospective students and their families. The program may include campus tours, financial aid and admissions workshops, and curriculum/program overviews. On Monday-Friday (July 31-August 4), there will be a morning (9am) and afternoon (2pm) session. On Saturday (August 5), there will be a morning (9am) session only.

In addition to visiting excellent private colleges in the state, you could SAVE money by participating in PCW! If you visit at least three of the participating colleges during the week, you will receive three application fee waivers. That means NO APPLICATION FEE for three Virginia private colleges of your choice (approximate value is $100)!

The fee waivers can be redeemed at any of the 24 undergraduate colleges that are members of CICV.

We'll be on the road visiting colleges that week, but unfortunately only 2 of them in VA. But also bear in mind that the fee waivers, while a nice perk, aren't that useful at many of these schools because they offer free online apps.

Liberty U is missing the boat. I'll have to write Jerry.

Careful -- A friend donated some money to Jerry, in my name, as a prank years and years ago. And it took years and years before I got off his solicitation mailing list. It's safe to say that, while L-burg is in our travel plans, my son will insist that we spend our time at the other school.

Are you thinking of visiting Roanoke College while you are down that way? It's a nice place! One month and a week until ours drives down - not that any of us are counting...

Kathie -- unfortunately not. Looks like at this point Roanoke is off the list, though I've heard nothing but good things about it. And since our time is squeezed as it is (4 schools in 3 days) we won't be able to swing by Roanoke even for a quick look to see if he might change his mind. This visit is Elon (again), Lynchburg, Bridgewater and McDaniel. I hate taking schools off the list sight unseen, but it has to be done or otherwise we'll be driving 24/7.

I have heard/read wonderful things about McDaniel and Elon! Sorry that JMU did not work out. My son's early summer orientation went very well there. He liked his advisor and got the courses that he needs and wants. If you do have any questions about JMU, just send a pm.

Loved Elon, but since that is at the top of the list for your son right now, I encourage you to consider visiting Roanoke, perhaps instead of McDaniel or Bridgewater. Although my son chose W&L over Roanoke for this fall, we can't say enough good things about Roanoke. Absolutely beautiful campus, wonderful people, nice town, up and coming school like Elon, good merit money, delightful administration. Having been to all of these, Roanoke seems more like Elon than the others on your list. Just my $.02!

Esquette, Thank you for posting this information. I have Roanoke on my list for S #2.

I know. I know. I know. What can I tell you? LOL. At the end of the day, these random decisions have to be made by the boy himself. I'm still lobbying to get Centre back on the list -- it also seems (sight unseen) a bit like Elon. But I'm not getting my hopes up. Darn 17-year olds wanting to make their own important decisions -- I've come across more schools than I count where I sit back and say "Damn! What a neat-sounding place, why didn't I ever know about it 30 years ago?"

Elon was tops on the list for my daughter and knocked off by a better merit aid offer from her current school! The only negative for us was the location but seeing as how daughter is now at a college 15 hours away and son will be 6 hours away, that seems kind of silly. oh well, one more child to go!

Kathiep, site unseen, this is what I see as a negative for Elon too.

Take heart Iderochi! My S is headed off to the school that I originally picked as the best fit for him (but did not say so). I just put it on the list and found an excuse to get him there (sports camp). He was certain he wanted to go elsewhere, flirted hard with other schools, and could have been happy at any of the schools he eventually applied to. But over time, with add'l visits to that and other campuses, he came to the conclusion that W&L is "it" for him. Shocked everyone who thought he was headed for his parents' alma mater, but not us. So hang in there and don't say too much! Btw, we're from nearby apparently, Salisbury.

W&L is a beautiful campus -- looked around while doing a tour next door at VMI. Lee Chapel in particular was incredible. And yep we're not too far away in Magnolia DE south of Dover. Get to Salisbury every now and then to watch the Shorebirds (and just bought a car from Pohanka!).

Also interesting that Roanoke is where 3 of my son's classmates are headed this fall -- out of 25 grads in their tres small independent school class, all of whom had plenty of other options, that's pretty significant.

We're a Pohanka family too!

W&L simply won my son's heart the old fashioned way - beauty (stunning campus on Natl Historic Register), brains (I'm sure I couldn't get in!), sports (he will play lacrosse), bucks (merit scholarship), and lots and lots of personal attention. He is in love and can't wait for it all to begin.

Centre is a hidden gem!

For my D, it was a tough decision between W&L and Richmond and her 3rd choice. It came down to the wire, to say the least.

Esquette,
Lacrosse, is that one of the reasons that Roanoke was on the short list and why the three from your son's HS will be going there? I think they told us they were really good in d3 lacrosse.

I concur about Centre - they are doing some terrific things (Centre Commitment) and deserve more notice. Last year there were several applicants from the CC ranks.

W&L very good choice - hope your son loves it there - as much as mine did - and we do :)

I just love Washington & Lee. In ten years I'll be forcing my own son to put it on his list.

VA has a really interesting variety of private colleges--touring a bunch of them is fun from the "compare and contrast" perspective!
