Roanoke is a top Div III lacrosse school (ranked in top 10 most of the past three years I believe). Just graduated a big senior class of players. Watched them take Salisbury U into OT in Div III semifinals this year -- would have ended at 69 game win streak for SU.

One of my son's friends is a recruited goalie (the Roanoke coach is well known as one of the best goalie coaches in lax). Another plays lax, but had ACL surgery this year. He's going to try to make the team, but realizes it's an uphill climb. Another actually moved to GA before his senior yr, but is still treated as an honorary alum -- doesn't play.

W&L has a long and successful lacrosse tradition as well. Waiting to hear who the new coach will be!

oh my goodness! I just watched a news update from a local station and they said that the college was going to have a news conference in a few minutes. I agree NEmom, I would also think they would be required to have carbon monoxide detectors, something that I would not think to ask about. I will now.

Kathiep, I just heard about it on one of the news stations. They said that there was a carbon monoxide leak, but did not know what the source of that leak was, and there was no comment made about detectors. They did say that people became ill.

I usually associate that with fires, charcoal and heating systems. Being that it's about 90 in the shade in Roanoke this time of year I wonder what the source was.

My guess is after this incident they will be more vigilant then any other college about Carbon Monoxide detectors. In the reports I've read, they haven't talked about why it wasn't detected. Our house is all electric, I don't really know what a CO2 detector looks like. Are they similar to smoke detectors?

We purchased a carbon monoxide detector that just plugs into a wall outlet and placed it in our upstairs hallway. Very cheap. When it beeped one day, I paid attention but it stopped. A couple days later, it beeped a few times. We call our HVAC people. That's how we found a hairline crack in our furnace.

Guess I'll be purchasing another one for my son's college dorm.
