Hi I am seriously debating whether or not to apply to Virginia Tech for Engineering Early Decision or to wait for regular.
I love the school and honestly feel that I will choose it over any of my other options but I have an irrational fear of getting locked into a binding decision and possibly changing my mind.
My stats:
Male
Private Catholic High School
Massachusetts
3.76/4.0 GPA as of the end of Junior year. Expecting roughly a 4.3 weighted GPA for first quarter of senior year
Best Single Score ACT : 28 Composite, 30 English, 27 Math, 27 Reading, 27 Science.
I also have a superscore of 29 with all the same subscores as above except a 32 for reading
AP’s : AP Language/Composition, AP Physics I, AP Economics (Macro and Micro), AP US History
Honors: Chemistry, Physics, French III, and English III, Pre-Calculus
Extracurriculars:
- President (and founder) of my school's Engineering Club (We have done many service related projects, such as designing web servers for a school in Rwanda) • Grades: 10, 11, 12
- Junior Counselor Training Program (Unpaid residential summer camp counselor/teen leadership program) • Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 (Summer vacation)
- Elected Student Council Representative (Student Government) • Grades: 11, 12
- National Honor Society Member + Tutor • Grades: 11, 12
- Officer in the Students for Soldiers Club: A club that holds care package drives for active duty soldiers and works to bring in veterans and active duty servicemen and servicewomen as speakers for the student body. • Grades: 10, 11, 12
- Green Eagles (Officer): A club working towards making our school community more environmentally friendly and aware of our own carbon footprint. • Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
I have written a personal statement about how although I am not in Calculus as a senior (I take pre-calc honors right now) that it is simply because I never had time to take a summer course to advance my math track, and had prior commitments over the summer to my leadership program. I also mentioned how I have been watching MIT Open courseware Single Variable Calculus lectures to help myself learn the basics.
I want to go to this school, but is applying ED necessary to give me that boost to compensate for my average test scores and math course-load, or will applying regular still give me a decent chance? Thank you!
