<p>My friend got into tech because of some diversity program. Has anyone ever heard of something like this?</p>
<p>All colleges in the State of Virginia at one time operated under Jim Crow segregation laws, meaning that legally Virginia Tech was once reserved for only white students. Today’s diversity recruiting is the latest effort in the attempts to redress that past. I believe that Virginia is among the southern states whose dual system (Jim Crow) system of colleges remains under a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice.</p>
<p>VT’s Center for Enhancement of Engineering Diversity, or CEED, may be what you are referring to. Here’s a link to the website that can give you lots of information.</p>

<p>My daughter got accepted in October through the diversity program – hers was engineering but there were lots of students there from all kinds of backgrounds. The program is exceptional and Tech does a fanastic job with diversity programs – it was a whole weekend at Tech paid for by them.</p>
<p>There is a program through admissions office called “Fall Visitation” where students from various college access programs in the state visit VT for a weekend and then receive their decision letters at the end of the visit. It’s done through the admissions office, but high school students sign up through their high school’s program. It targets minority, low income, and first generation students from all majors.</p>

<p>Out of curiosity are there any programs for socioeconomic diversity, at VT or elsewhere? I kind of doubt it but it’d be interesting if there were.</p>
