Hi, I have just sent in my application to Virginia Tech early decision for the engineering program. I have a 3.677 GPA and a 1320 SAT. Math 720, Verbal 600. I'm taking 3 AP courses this year. I go to a public school in Northern Virginia. What do you think my chances of acceptance to the engineering program are? Thanks.

shoe in 100%

100%++++++++

You're in...

Do you mind me asking what school you went to? Because i went to a public high school in northern virginia too.

I currently attend Herndon High in Fairfax County

Oh ok, i went to TC Williams in alexandria

I went to TC Williams, graduated in 1975. My GPA was not so strong (but had several APs (Physics w/Calculus, and BC Calculus as a Junior)). 780 Math and 570 Verbal SATs. I applied to VPI&SU for Aerospace and Ocean Engineering... and was rejected. "Well then," I said, "apply me to Physics. Failing that, apply me to Music." The reply was, "Congratulations! You're a Physics major." You can always change your course of study.

i live 45miles from dc, so basicly northern virginia..

i dont see how you could be rejected, VT is easy as crap to get into, even for engineering (although its more competitive than the rest of it). when i went on a tour there they said that in general, 3.5+ gpa is good enough to get you in, and u are 60pts higher than their engineering average SAT, so you are fine.

VT is my safety, hopeing to get in somewhere better =) 1350sat, 4.0 uw gpa

Back in 1977 some curricula were very competitive. I left TC Williams with about a 3.0 GPA and went straight into the Junior Physics curriculum at George Mason U. I basically dropped the first semester... did a quarter at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), and returned to GMU... neglecting to drop the second semester, resulting in 2 'F's... my ownly grades from GMU. I then finished the first two years of an engineering curriculum at NVCC with about a 3.4 GPA.

The point I was trying to make was not that Virginia Tech is hard to get into. I was just trying to convey the notion that you can almost assuredly get in under some major... There is little to keep you from subsequently changing majors.

I personally chose not to do so. I finished the Physics BS with a Material Science Option in 1981 with a 2.9, and then a Math BS in 1983 with a 3.8. I stayed to finish a MSEE in early 1984 with a 3.4. After a subsequent Master in Engineering Management, I'm making about twice, six-figures, so I can't complain... though I would recommend pushing the PhD thing, not a second Masters (or Bachelors) degree.

I will wait until I hear my acceptance before I begin to worry about the Masters and double majors etc...Thank you for you information though. Anyone else have any tech insight? Thanks!

What do you think are the advantages to going to UVA for bio-med engin. or other engineering programs?

bump bump bump

Hey, I'm just letting everyone know that I was accepted to Tech engineering early decision!

Hi I’ve applied ED to Virginia Tech and I was just wondering what my chances were?
I listed that I want to major in Engineering and I have a low GPA that is 3.5 unweighted but it’s because my freshmen and sophomore GPA’s were low and my Junior year was significantly better and my senior year first quarter gpa is a 3.85 unweighted which ive sent in
I sent in my ACT scores and they only look at math and english, so combined i have a 29
Also im a 2 season captain and im president of many other groups in and out of school
I just wanted to know what you all thought because Ive read that engineering will lessen your chances of getting it but I was told that it could only help because im a girl applying for engineering?
thanks so much!
