Virginia Tech or Ohio State

Hi all , I'm Tunisian and I am offered admission to Virginia Tech and Ohio state as an international freshman (engineering)
I am extremely hesitant and don't really know what to choose. I really need help. My major critereas are diploma recognition and fun on-campus I want to enjoy my life while studying.

Virginia Tech would me my pick of the two. Great school/academically, community feel, fun atmosphere.

Thank you for your help. Are you a VT student ?

No, I’ve lived in Virginia for the past 12 years, but was raised in Ohio. Have lots of friends and family that have attended both schools. My sister just finished her PhD at Ohio State actually, in linguistics. It’s just a huge school and not right for everyone. My best friend is a VT grad and goes on an on about how wonderful her years were there. I wish I could give you more feedback on programs etc., hope that you will get some more replies to give you more first hand feedback. Go to the VT threads and then the OSU one to get more from current students. Good luck on your decision!

Thank you very much again and again that helps a lot.

I would suggest Ohio State!
The overall academic quality is great, and I honestly have not met a single student who doesn’t like it there. The school pride is one of the best in the country and seriously infectious! All of their grad programs are slowly moving up into the top 20-30, and based on what you want to study it’s a great school versus Virginia Tech. I’m sure people who go to Virginia Tech love it, but OSU’s size gets a bad rap - it’s a plus. You get to meet new people, there’s an abundant amount of resources, you just never run out of things to do, which is awesome! You would definitely have diploma recognition at OSU and have tons of fun what with their amazing sports teams  GO BUCKS!

Ohio State Hires Dean for Engineering College

The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State’s College of Engineering will soon have a new dean, officials announced today.

David B. Williams, president of the University of Alabama at Huntsville, will assume the post that has been vacant since William “Bud” Baeslack III left to become provost at Case Western Reserve University in 2008.

Pending approval by the board of trustees, Williams’ appointment will begin April 18. He will earn $395,000.

Gregory Washington, professor of mechanical engineering, will continue to serve as interim dean of the college until Williams arrives.

“We are very fortunate to have attracted David Williams to Ohio State,” President E. Gordon Gee said in a statement. “He has a superb track record as a scholar and an academic leader, and he has created substantial partnerships to spur innovation and the commercialization of faculty discoveries.”

At Alabama, Williams, 62, helped lead the university in operating an office for Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and creating research collaboration agreement with Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, which designs and produces rocket engines.

He also guided the campus through its largest reduction in state funding - 28 percent since spring 2008 - and the shootings of six faculty and staff members by another professor last year.

A native of Leeds, England, Williams holds a bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate and a doctorate of science degrees from the University of Cambridge.

“David Williams has a world-class academic reputation, and his work in building research partnerships between universities and industry and government is well-proven,” Jeff Wadsworth, president and CEO of Battelle, said in a statement.

University of Cambridge!! Go Bucks!!! :)

Definitely choose Virginia Tech!

Check out this CC thread to see 2011 engineering rankings: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/981759-us-news-undergrad-engineering-rankings-2011-a.html

As you can see, VA TEch is ranked higher than Ohio State. Of course, rankings aren’t everything, but I still think VA Tech is the best choice! The school is BEAUTIFUL, and it’s in a really great college town. Companies know that engineers from VA Tech are top quality!

Both are great engineering schools with loads of fun on campus, but you may want to think about the surrounding area. Ohio State is in a big city with lots to do off campus. Virginia Tech is in one of the smallest university towns I’ve ever seen. Everything revolves around the university. However if you enjoy outdoor pursuits (hiking, caving, etc), Virginia Tech is better. I would choose Ohio State. Columbus has historical neighborhoods, a strong local arts scene, professional symphony, a major science museum and zoo, a pro hockey team etc etc etc

“Everything revolves around the university”…and “Virginia Tech is in one of the smallest university towns I’ve ever seen”…

It is funny, my son found those two factors to be reasons he wanted to go to VT.
Just proves everyone has different opinions on what they see as positives/negatives!

Good luck to the OP as he/she decides!

Thank you very much to all of you !
