My son received a rejection from the University Honors program at Tech as an incoming Freshman. How often does this happen? What skills/classes is he missing? What does it mean to not be in this program if he is very focused on school and doing well in school?

Don’t worry, he will be fine. My S went to a big state u. and turned down the honors program. He still had a great four years and graduated with honors.

My best friend’s D was worried about even getting into VT two years ago and now she is in the top 15% of the soph. class at VT and was just invited into the Honor Society there.

I did get accepted into the University Honors program as an incoming freshman (I am a rising sophomore now), and let me just say that it won’t make a huge difference in his first year experience. To be honest, the main benefit of the honors program is getting priority with class registration. Some of my friends didn’t get the classes they wanted for second semester but I wound up pretty well off. So, really, the main perk of University Honors doesn’t come into play until at least your second semester. Plus, if you have a 3.6 GPA you will be invited to apply to the Honors program. As for honors classes, I have only been able to take one–Honors Freshman English, which was only a one semester, 3 credit class, but still satisfied the gen-ed requirements for English, which is normally 6 credits, so that was nice. Other than that, it wasn’t really anything amazing or inspirational…but again, just my experience with the one class.

The honors program is limited in enrollment, so there are lots of kids who meet all the requirements but just couldn’t make it in due to space constraints. I wouldn’t use it as a harbinger of your son’s future performance at all; the honors program can be a convenience, but it’s nothing to feel inferior over if you don’t get in.

don’t forget: honors= suite living in nice hillcrest and main campbell hall communities!

usually locals and in-states who already knew for sure this is what they’re doing … are the ones who get into the community freshmen year.

don’t worry bout ittt haha go next semester
