<p>Its undergraduate enigneering program is tied for 14th (or 9th if you disreguard the weird system of ties) with northwestern and John Hopkins. (USNWR). What kind of weight would a degree in mechanical or chemical engineering from VT hold in both the job market and graduate admissions?</p>
<p>You shouldn't take the rankings too seriously. Schools in the range of say 10 above and 10 below doesn't necessarily mean they are in that exact order of quality.</p>
<p>VT graduates are respected. My friend who graduated as an ME last year got a job as a technical sales rep with an attractive salary offer right out of school without taking an FE. Couple other people I know at VT right now have jobs lined up in various other engineering studies.</p>
