Has anyone taken any Virtual High School courses?
Is it effective?
Do you gain credits for your normal high school?

NC has a pretty good VPS (creatively named NCVPS…) The core courses are pretty good, but the electives are pretty jokeish (I’m taking a course on Medieval Europe right now. interesting, but it is ridicously easy.) A lot of virtual schools are designed for credit recovery (not the reason I’m taking it, but its why the majority of the kids enrolled in my course are) or the like, and as such the courses aren’t particularly challenging, but it all depends on what you put into it i.e. I have a friend who got a 5 on the AP Latin: Virgil Exam (which he took through NCVPS.)

yeah I took a vhs course once at my school for credit. I’m not sure how much it counts for colleges…i guess it depends on the course. I was told it shows good work ethic to motivate yourself to keep up with the work assigned, but I’m not sure how “rigorous” it’s considered to schools, especially top ivies.

I’m the student rep for this program actually. The majority of standard courses in general are easy, NCVPS does not wish to offer courses online that are at a much different difficulty level than the “home” school would offer it. It also depends on the teacher and the course. Depending on the teacher, I think AP Calculus BC and AP Physics B are the hardest courses. One thing you might also want to consider, is what you actually do in a face-to-face class. If you think about it, many courses are over an hour and you learn pretty much what could be read in 15 minutes.

With very few exceptions, colleges wouldn’t know whether you took the course online or not. The times when you or someone else might mention it are when you went beyond what your school offers–which is always a good thing.

Has anybody had any experience with the AP French course? I want to take it but would like some firsthand comments about it before I dish out $900

How about making your own post instead of pulling up a four year old one? People will probably start answering the original poster instead of you.
