I just got this invitation thing in the mail from Rice about a program for minorities in Feb. I applied ID so I won't know if I'm even accepted until right before the program. I've heard this is a good sign for admissions, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Does anyone know? Is it just something they send to every minority that applies or what? Thanks for any help!

hey...post more information about this program; is it actually for minorities or for all minorities except asians? I am interested in learning about this program; do you have any affiliation with Rice? Have you sent in your app? Did they just randomly mail this to you? What's the process of application for Vision 2006?

Any information is appreciated!

I applied for ID and from what I've read in old forums it seems like the program is for all minorities except asians, but I could be totally wrong. I don't think you can apply for it, you can just register once they send you an invite. That's all I know!

it IS for all minorities except asians...because asians are actually a majority @ rice...

not true. Asian students may be overrepresented at Rice, but they are not a majority!

they are the majority of the "minority"..YOU KNOW WHAT I MEANT! ;)

Ok so now I'm really confused! If the ID decision doesnt come out until "by feb. 10" and the RSVP date for the Vision thing is Feb 2., then what should i do? I guess I won't go because I won't know if I'm admitted by then! But why would they schedule the program so close to the decision date?

Definitely go. They pay for everything, there is no reason not to. You spend several days here and it is a great way to get to know Rice. I'll be hosting!

It has always been that way, many of the people I talked to at the program had just found out they got accepted a couple days before they arrived. Many people there still didn't know whether or not they were going to get accepted

Generally, if you get invited there is a very good chance you will be accepted. No gurantees though.

Dimnar a very good chance is going to suck to the person who does not get into rice. Where did you hear that the vision thing is a good chance and more importantly what is a good chance. Have the made the decesions already for ID and what would not garentee your acceptance.

If that is what vision means anyway

Being asian is no fun. Ur a minority but don't get any of the perks of being a minority only the pitfalls

Sigh.....perks, you mean discrimination and the rest of the garbage. There are some minorities that have not even experienced what it means to be one. Where i am from it is rare to have a black valedictorian. I get scorn for it almost everyday. And as for being asian, deal with it, play your cards right and you will not need the minority status..afterall atleast your parents know that you take AP classes...my father does not live with me and my mom does not know a class i have been in since the 6th grade.

A very good chance, just means that, a very good chance.

For Vision, they are trying to invite the URM students who are going to get accepted. There is no gurantee though. It does happen(though only rarely) that someone will get invited but then not accepted, it also occurs that people get accepted even though they were not invited. That's life though. These cases are very much the exception, not the rule.

I definitely encourage everyone who was invited to come. I had a great time my Vision weekend. It is one of the best ways to really get to know Rice. Plus all expenses paid! You can't pass that up.

dimnar -

I assume you are a student that perhaps is somehow affiliated with Admissions from the inside track you seem to have. According to your information, I guess my d has good reason to be upset. She has been invited to every minority and non-minority event hosted by Rice in the last year and she received several letters from the Director of Hispanic Recruitment, one even mentioning that she would be receiving information about the Vision weekend in January. She applied ID with competitive credentials, yet she has not received an invitation. I guess we can infer what her decision will be.

Kind of a shame to have to find out this way.

Don't lose hope! Like I said, the system is not perfect. I have friends who are here but did not get invited to Vision!

Thanks dimnar -D is from Houston and has visited Rice many times. It seems as though Vision may focus on getting kids to visit that might not otherwise have the opportunity. Just a thought.

D is keeping her hopes up though.

Is Vision 2006 only for ID Applicants?

The Vision weekend is for URMs. By invitation only; ED, ID and RD I believe.

are you sure? i think its only for ID and RDs

Hmm...possibly right Apollo. ED is binding...no need to try to convince them.

I registered-does Rice schedule and pay for the travel expenses, or do I pay and get reimbursed?
