Hello! I am a sophomore in High School and I am interested in becoming a pilot in either the Air Force or Navy. My vision is very poor, but not horrible (-2.75R,-2.50L). I wear contacts. My question: can I become a pilot with this vision? Will the Academies correct it for me with laser surgery? Thank you for your help!

You can not become a pilot with that vision.

The academies are offering laser surgery to those for whom it is appropriate after their 21st birthday (but there are no guarantees you'd get it). I believe that cadets who've had their eyes done by the academy qualify for pilot training. DO NOT get them done prior to application to an academy - you'll be automatically disqualified.

Your vision will put you into a more competitive pool for admission to the academies. Make sure you do everything now to make your application as compelling as possible (good grades, tough courses).

Good luck.
