Visit Ann Arbor in Feb

You only need to worry about ice (freezing rain overnight) and blizzard (white outs). In either case, maybe avoid the e-way. If the conditions aren’t that bad, which it rarely is, just drive slower if anything. They don’t clear roads either, or fix them for that matter.

Ice is the big issue. If it’s icy, avoid driving if at all possible.

Snow is just not that big a problem. It’s Michigan. We have plows. We know how to use them. What can I say; I may live in the South now, but I still think of myself as “from” Michigan.

I skimmed the posts, and I don’t see any reference to Zingerman’s Deli. You need to get there while you’re in Ann Arbor. It’s an institution, and for very good reason.

We’ve found Yelp extremely reliable in helping us find great restaurants in Ann Arbor (and elsewhere). Have fun, and make sure you take layers!! It may be really cold outside, but it may also be in the mid- to high-70s inside!

We ate at Zingerman’s during our visit a few days ago because, well, you have to go there if you are in AA. The food was good. I had a (small) Reuben, and it was tasty. But it was a $13 Reuben. Ridiculously overpriced. The large Reuben was $15. The desserts, next door, were crazy overpriced and looked like those mass produced cakes you see in NY diners. We wanted to love Zingerman’s and we are glad we went. But, can’t help feeling ripped off.

Zingerman’s is ridiculuously overpriced but it is really good. So are the desserts. Zingerman’s Roadhouse is a restaurant on the west side of town which is also really good.

^^^^and also overpriced. To get really good deli, that is still not cheap by any means but reasonable in comparison, you need to head over to the northwest burbs of Detroit. Star Delicatessen in Southfied is the best.

Star Deli is the best but I don’t think driving to Southfield is the advice the other posters are looking for.

^^^I agree res ipsa. It’s just that I am kind of tired of hearing how great Zingerman’s is.

Friday is here and the snow isn’t.

I could go for a lean corned beef on rye from Star Deli. Perhaps with chopped liver on it. Maybe for lunch tomorrow.

Did anyone get a confirmation email for their admitted student day visits other than the one you get when you register??

Does Southwest fly to Ann Arbor? If not which airport is the closest to Michigan.

Detroit (DTW) is the closest Airport to Ann Arbor. Southwest flies there.

The Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is located 20 miles from Ann Arbor. It is in fact closer to Ann Arbor than it is to downtown Detroit. You should find direct flights to DTW from virtually every major city in the US.

The Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is probably the most traveler friendly airport that I have ever seen. We live in the Washington DC area and my son flies back and forth using Southwest airline out of Baltimore. There never seems to be anyone in the Detroit Airport. Rental car is very convenient, the service is really quick, and access to I-94 easy.

Southwest is at the North Terminal which houses almost every domestic airline but Delta. It is rarely busy. Delta utilizes the McNamara Terminal which is frantically busy from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

…and the speed limit from Detroit Airport to Ann Arbor, for most of the way, was 70 mph! Plus no traffic.

We made the trip. We were lucky, it snowed when we were in Ann Arbor but not when we were driving. U Michigan sure is impressive and Ann Arbor is a nice town to live. Only if it’s not so expensive!

Hope you had a nice time fire123 and that you got to use some of the advice given to you by the posters in this thread.

“U Michigan sure is impressive and Ann Arbor is a nice town to live. Only if it’s not so expensive!”

Impressive university in a nice town = expensive. Demand and supply. But it is worth it, if you do not have to sacrifice too much.
