Well I live in NYC, and I was wondering...would Penn be fine if I don't visit the campus, considering that it's a bit far? In other words, will they take it against me that I didn't visit?

lol NYC is quite close to Penn from my point of view since I live in California and visited (but then again I applied ED and I visited to make sure that it’s really where I wanted to go for the next four years of my life).

I don’t think the college will hold it against you if you don’t visit though. Still, IMHO it’s good to visit a college to see if it’s good for you, but I don’t think Penn would hold it against you if you don’t visit.

On the map it looks close, but considering that my parents do not own a car, and I’ll have to take public transportation to get there…according to Google Maps its ~4 hours, quite a while.

Yes, I know - I was just comparing the time difference in traveling to Penn from San Francisco (2 and a half days drive) compared to NYC, no offense meant. Like I said, I don’t think Penn will hold a non-visit against you. Just make sure your interest for the school comes across in your essay and you’ll be fine.

Yeah, well that’s impressive what you did. :)

And thanks for answering.

You’ll be fine. Don’t worry. Plenty of people never get to visit beforehand.

As far as I know they don’t keep a list of people who visit so I don’t see how they would even know if you didn’t. But really NYC is maybe 2 hours by bus.

penn won’t hold it against you…and with chinatown and other bus options you can get to campus in 2 hrs. for a few dollars…

I would go to NYC a few times x month when I was at penn…with amtrak’s acela service you can make it into manhattan from campus in ~ 1hr.

Megabus or Bolt Bus is 2 hours from central Manhattan to 3 blocks from Penn, prices usually around $10-$13 each way. You don’t have to visit, but travel difficulty shouldn’t be an issue.

Nah, they won’t hold it against you. I believe they have specifically stated that they don’t take Campus Visits in to consideration.

However, it is a good idea to visit the school to get a feel for it, and whether you feel like a good fit. It can also definitely help you write better essays.

Jhs: Thanks for that info. It’s very helpful.

Meadow: I saw many pictures of Penn. Quite amazing.

If you live in New York, you really should come visit Penn’s campus. The worst thing you can do is enroll only to find out that the atmosphere is exactly what you DON’T want, and there is no better way to figure that out than to visit yourself. Like other people said, the buses get you right to walking distance of campus for 10 bucks (but two hours is laughable unless it’s at a random time… think more along the lines of 3 hours with traffic); you can also take the NJ Transit NE Corridor line to the SEPTA Trenton line… it’ll cost you somewhere around 25 bucks each way, but it will get you to Philly in a little over two hours if you time the trains right, and there’s no traffic!

See you’re studying for exams as well as I am…

Any bus I’ve been on from NY to Philly or viceversa hasn’t taken longer than 2 hours and 10 minutes, and usually it is spot on 2 hours (no matter what time of day). Also, always take Bolt over Megabus when going to NY from Philly.

It’s actually quite close to Penn lol. Just take the bus and you get straight to 30th street station which is eight blocks from campus. lots and lots of students travel btwn nyc and philly, be it for exploring, job interviews, etc

I live in LA and I woke up at 4 AM to catch an 8 AM flight to get to Penn by 12:00 to sit in on a Classics class.

If you care, you’ll do it.

@FightingQuaker,

I was just being an insomniac… my exam schedule was a joke this semester haha … also I have never been on a bus that got Philly to NYC in 2:10! Hell, I was on a bus that took 5 hours, including getting PULLED OVER in the tunnel. … definitely not a bus fan.

Dear lord…I’ll consider myself lucky then!
