Visit on Saturday in Late June

We're eastcoasters. We'll be driving through the area anyway.

Is there anything to visit or see on the last Saturday in June?

If not, we may just stop in the town of Oberlin for lunch. Any recommendations?

Oberlin’s generally pretty quiet over the summer (and since it’s a Saturday, there are no tours or info sessions). The last Saturday in June is the [Chalk Walk](http://www.oberlinchalkwalk.com/), though, which is generally a lot of fun, and even if you’re just passing through for ten minutes you won’t be able to miss it. There may also be things going on at the [Oberlin Heritage Center](http://www.oberlinheritage.org/), if that’s up your alley. Oh, yeah, and the art museum (under renovation) should be newly re-opened by then.

Oberwiki has a pretty good run-down of [dining options](<a href=“Registrant WHOIS contact information verification | Namecheap.com”>Registrant WHOIS contact information verification | Namecheap.com) in town, but these are the ones I’d particularly recommend for lunch:

  • Agave (burrito bar)
  • Aladdin’s (Mediterranean)
  • Black River (brunch type food)
  • The Feve (burgers, sandwiches, wraps, seriously incredible tater tots)
  • There are a few Chinese restaurants of varying quality – from least classy to most, The Mandarin, Tooo Chinoise, and Weia Teia (Asian fusion)
They’re all within a block of each other, so you can walk around and check out your options :)

If you have a teacher contact at Oberlin, ask them if you might be able to meet up. I don’t know what major you are considering but a couple of places I would try to look at: the Conservatory, Finney Hall, the library (right behind Finney Hall) and the Science Center. A walk around the campus is always a plus. And I vote you try out The Feve and their burgers.

Black River has good food IMO.

There is great barbeque at Joe’s pit bbq on 3909 liberty ave in nearby Vermilion OH. We make it a point to go there everytime we visit Oberlin.

No academic buildings will be open on a Saturday in June, including the art museum (which does not reopen until this fall). Nor are faculty members likely to be on campus. Oberlin is certainly attractive in the summer–but please be aware that the impression you will get is very different from what the place is like when school is in session. You will see a sleepy, bucolic small town, not a dynamic place bursting with creativity.

Here’s a blog post on the subject of summer visits (but note that Elizabeth is not writing about a Saturday):
[Oberlin Blogs | Blog Entry: “Summer Visits”](http://blogs.oberlin.edu/applying/applying/summer_visits.shtml)

D will be a rising junior, so it’s not an “official” college visit. She has no idea what she would like, other than she likes science and math.

We’ll be driving from Pittsburgh to suburban Detroit anyway and have to eat lunch anyway. I realize it will be a very different impression than what it’s like during the school year, but is not worth stopping at all to see the campus? I’m just not sure when we’d have a chance to get back to Oberlin.

The other “college visit for lunch” alternative I was thinking of was to stop in the University Circle area of Cleveland near Case Western on the way for lunch.

If neither of those make sense, I’d love to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Not sure how the rest of my crew would feel about it though.

Sure, it’s definitely worth stopping, with the caveats above. And it’s much easier to get into and out of than University Circle.

I don’t know much about local dining, but there are times that I think my son chose Oberlin based on how much he liked the burger he had at the Feve.

I would absolutely recommend stopping in to Ginko Gallery. In front, there’s a boutique of locally-crafted art. In the middle, there are work spaces for local artisans. In the very back is the work space of Liz Burgess, owner/artist/Oberlin College alumna/cat whisperer. In her space, Liz fosters abandoned kittens as part of a local nonprofit, and she welcomes anyone to come help socialize the kittens. (Specifically, this means petting, holding, and playing nicely with them.)

Ginko is representative of Oberlin in many different ways (college and town), and Liz is happy to talk to anyone about Oberlin.

On the other hand, there are also self-guided walking tours available in a box outside Admissions. Or you could PM me (a recent alum wrapping up my one-year appointment as a staff member) for a meet-up.

I spent about 4 hours once at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with my daughter.
That was the second time I went. The first time I didn’t really “get” it and I was in and out of there in no time.

When we went the second time they were doing a special Dylan program upstairs. We went to all the listening booths and were able to figure out exactly when his voice got awful(ler). Then I got into the exhibits downstairs, they have a thing where you can trace the musical influences of various artists, and you can listen to some of the relevant tunes that demonstrate this influence. And there were some other things of interest as well.

There might be some events, barbeques, fairs, etc, going on in Cleveland, closer to the Rock Hall and Case, that might be more fun than staring at a vacant campus, you might check.

Don’t forget the Pro Football Hall of Fame in nearby Canton.

Doesn’t Oberlin hold campus tours in the summer? That was our first visit. It might not have been on a Saturday, though, but it was an official campus tour in the summer. There were very few students around but it wasn’t a total wasteland. The tour guide took us into most of the buildings on north campus. I suggest ClassicRockerDad contact the office and find out if there will be a prospie tour on the day he and his family will visit. Maybe if his schedule allows they can drive through on a weekday instead of Saturday and get an official tour. They gave us ice cream. :)

There are no tours on Saturdays in the summer.

If there is anyway that you can go on the campus tour it was the deciding factor for my son to choose Oberlin. The guide was very imformative and spent time afterwards answering all the students questions. The extra time spent he spent talking to him about conservatory opportunities as a Arts & Science student and his personal experiences being involved in both areas really made the difference in college choice.
