visit to Rhodes

Just visited Rhodes and very impressed! Incredibly beautiful campus with consistent gothic architecture. Everything was so clean and well kept.
From the first people we met in Burrow Hall to the very end, people were pleasant and helpful. Students were smiling and greeting each other walking through campus.
Son got to sit in on two classes and was enthusiastic. Was supposed to meet with a professor but unfortunately the professor had a lab.
Info session and campus tour was very informative. Our tour guides had a good sense of humor and were able to answer any and all questions.
I tried out the food, and the meatloaf (a traditional dreaded cafeteria food) was actually pretty good! Of course had to also stop at the Starbucks just off the library..if son does go to Rhodes i can see his flex bucks being depleted rather quickly there! any care packages may have to include starbucks cards.
Also had a chance to talk to a current (incredibly wonderful) student with the same interests as my son and loved her enthusiasm!! If any student attending any school had the same feelings as this student..a parent would know that it was a perfect fit.
I liked the feeling of security on campus, starting at the gate as we drove in.
I have read comments about the neighborhood and really didnt get a bad feeling! I somehow got a nail in a tire and while son was off in a class, drove around to find a tire repair place and had no misgivings or dread.
We stayed downtown near Beale st and went to Blue City cafe for dinner. It was about a 10 minute drive to the campus.

Glad y’all had a good time. It ain’t perfect (I don’t think any of them are) but …I kinda like the place, too. ;)

Blues City is my favorite Beale eatery. (Central Market is gaining ground in the overall BBQ category.)

so glad that you had a good time at rhodes–i have been enjoying it thoroughly for the past four years and am a little sad about graduating this may! it has been a wonderful school for me and hopefully it will be a great fit for your son as well.

The Rhodes campus is so well manicured it makes the students look scruffy.LOL

We visited yesterday. Our experience was very positive.

D & I got a postcard perfect day as well on the Rhodes campus. I asked a groundskeeper if every day was that perfect at Rhodes, I got a big toothy grin and a “yes, ma’am” in return (then again any 70 degree plus day in February is OK by us!!!)

We went to visit our S there last weekend. Had a nice time even though the weather was sketchy - didn’t see the sun until Sunday afternoon.

We spend Sunday morning at the zoo, which is right across the street from campus. Nice amenity to have it so close! We could have watched the bonobo family all day.

big g, rachacha… it was high on “my” list of schools prior to the visit, and somewhere near the top of my son’s list…after the visit he was really enthused and it moved way up. wish he could apply ed but we will have to do regular as merit aid will be a major deciding factor.

hey ppl, im an international student accepted at rhodes…!!! Do we have to share a room with another international student or a permanent US resident.??? just curious :P

hi again! I believe that if you are an international student you are typically paired with a U.S. citizen–the theory being is that it will aid in the adjustment process and any potential issues with transportation, etc. Several Chinese students are freshman at Rhodes this year and I have had so much fun getting to know them and from what they have told me, they are thoroughly enjoying the Rhodes experiences and have adapted quickly to the campus enviornment. They have also made many friendships with Chinese language students that are trying to learn the language–it seems like a win-win situation from all accounts!

cool, Im sure it will be an amzing experience…could you tell me about the food as well.?? like the variety, taste, timings etc etc… I heard that the dininng hall timings aren’t really suitable…

We also visited Rhodes recently. I agree with everything parent56 said. It was a great visit and D says she is definitely applying. After reading some of the older threads here I paid particular attention to the surrounding areas. Frankly, I didn’t see anything I felt to be a cause for concern near campus. I noted some really nice areas as well as some that showed signs of decline, but nothing particulary ominous. I’m glad I saw it first hand because now I can easily put those concerns to rest.

D sat in on a class and had a great time. The prof also took time afterwrds to speak with her privately, and to our surprise, came out to meet us while we were waiting outside. It was great. I also agree that the students and administrators we encountered were very friendly. The tour guides were a lot of fun and did an excellent job. The facilities were well maintained, and safety was readily apparent. I read the crime blotter in the student newspaper and it gave me a good chuckle – a couple reports of loud music, a visitor found asleep in his car, etc…

DW, who is not a big fan of LACs, was very impressed with the whole experience. When we visited the bookstore we were given a free coffee table sized book full of photos and a history of the college. At first I thought the gesture was nice, but a little over the top. It’s a fairly expensive book. But then I learned that the President asked them to give copies to prospectives when visiting the bookstore. It was a very nice touch and left a lasting impression on us.

We ate at Central BBQ and almost hurt ourselves eating too much. Whew! Good food. They noted we were visiting from out of town and really treated us royally. I will have to see to it that D gets enrolled if only to have a good excuse to get back there.

I tried, but really couldn’t find any negatives to take away from our visit. I’m not saying it’s a perfect school or anything, but there were no obvious or glaring shortcomings during our time there.

how welcoming is Rhodes for an international student? especially someone from Pakistan…

krakenjack, I’ve visited at least a dozen times , met at least a hundred students, and it seems to be a very welcoming place. I cannot speak to how you will be received on campus as I don’t know you but based upon your posting here, I’m pretty sure you’ll be just fine. I wouldn’t worry about being from Pakistan, if that is the worry. Rhodes is not an overly or overtly religious place although there are many people of faith (all faiths being represented).

Rhodes is not a backwater LAC full of rednecks. IMO the dominant campus culture is one of serious students, of good will, who care about their fellow man, and express that caring in many forms of volunteer activities, both by group and individual action. If that sounds like you, you’ll be fine.

@ curmudgeon

Thank you so much for your views…I can’t wait to come to Rhodes…!!!

hi krakenjack,

i don’t think you will have any problems with being from pakistan! the amount of international students at rhodes seems to increase each year. two of my best friends are actually from pakistan and “fit in” very well at rhodes. there are students from many different countries and backgrounds here and almost all of them seem to feel at home on campus.

also, the food at rhodes is quite good, but one must be selective. i am a rather picky eater by all standards but do enjoy several of the dishes at rhodes–especially the pizza at the lair–definitely a favorite! the food around campus is so good as well–i completely agree with the central BBQ comment posted earlier–that you will have no trouble finding lots of great food!

KO

Thank you Koveracre

sure thing–happy to be of some help! i’m really just a huge fan of rhodes and love that we are gaining more international students–it is always so fun to have a chance to talk with someone with a different background. one of my current roommates is egyptian and we have so much fun comparing our high school experiences, etc.

That’s great!!. I just payed my 400$ deposit.  looking forward to the Rhodes Experience…Btw Do international students get US residents as room mates ??

so excited for you! i think typically international students are paired with US students for roommates, but that is more of an observation of mine rather than a hard and fast rule.
