Well, D and I head the rig toward WashU for a visit. Any special sights to see/avoid? She's pretty amped about it. This starts the long slow wind down. After this 2 more trips and she's done till acceptance/rejection time. It's nice to know that she can still be excited about a visit!

Can not send PM - your box is full

I know. Sorry. Doesn't that just tick you off?

the loop is kind of fun to see....
the gateway arch sells tickets early for the entire day and sells out. Get tickets first thing for later in the day...

Anxious to hear your impressions. WUStL also on my D's short list. They already started school down here so may not get a chance to visit until late fall.

audiophile, Darling D found two free days with no marching practice and no school so we are heading Midwesterly-ish-like. We are in your situation on 2 other trips and we'll just have to cut class and fly red-eyes , I guess.

Thanks kdos. I used to spend some time in St. Louis, I'm just completely unfamiliar with the campus area. I had an Aunt who lived in Brentwood.

curmudgeon, I want an in-depth report about Wash U. It's on my kid's list.

It's on the way. We hope to do a thorough job. I wish the students were there but I wll use every tool available to us as Wash U is one of only two selective smaller uni's on D's list. As time grows nearer I wonder if she'll decide a small uni is the place to be (greater resources). We'll see.

I'm curious too.

One thing people seem to love about washu is the atmosphere and feeling of community - its a little harder to get an idea during the summer, but its always nice to spend some time where the students hang out (like Holmes lounge). Which school at washu is your daughter applying to?

laurezer, as of today she wants to stay in Arts and Sciences and be a Bio major with a Math or Spanish minor or double major. Probably means Medieval Literature.

My son visited swarthmore, new college of florida, uchicago, harvard, oberlin, washu. He came home from his visit to washu saying what a friendly campus it is. He had an unusual amount of people (students, staff, profs) offering help on his visit. (I figured if HE noticed it it must be unusual). He is in Arts and Sciences and we have been impressed with the faculty that my S has met. When are you going? Freshmen move in on the 25th.

there is nothing really cool in St. Louis. Terrific city! :) Great place not to get distracted :)

... I know you're pretty sarcastic, but come on, StL isnt bad at all - theres tons of stuff to do off campus, and lots of fun places to hang out and explore... PLENTY of stuff going on to distract you from boring work :D

Tons of students work and take summer classes during the summer, so D will get to visit with students. My son does the Tuesday morning tours. He loves Wash U, and I do not think that he will ever want to return to Iowa.

Just helped D move to St Louis to start Grad Shool at Wash U.
There's plenty of students around and I saw more tour groups there in a short period of time than anywhere else including Harvard!
I was impressed by the city, its compact and easy to get around in (I'm a New Yorker) with great housing stock and a decent downtown.Area near the Arch is quaint. The Loop area was nice at night, plenty of places to eat and just walk around..its pretty diverse, which I found very nice.School is well cared for, obviously there's maintenance $$ floating around unlike other places we've seen.Pretty compact campus too (we're used to very big OOState U)
Ditto on the friendly people aspect.I think thats a midwestern trait that rubs off on the kids who come there from all over!
Our experience was different of course, being a Grads parents.Just a casual hello in her department, alook at the dept facilities. No formal tour or orientation,Grad School does their own on the 22nd.No dorm tour, she has an apartment, though the "South 40" looked very nice..all new practically. We were told they just knocked down another "old"dorm which they seem to be doing regularly.Libary was just magnificent on the inside,it oozes rich wood paneling and seems well stocked down to the now obligatory food court.I understand it was just remodeled.

I wasn't being sarcastic. I'm serious, thats why I chose WashU

thats really sad... you should explore more! :)

i know. But I do like that attraction downtown thats like a gigantic maze/tunnels for adults. :)

St. Louis is better than Des Moines....Iowa
