Visit: where to stay, what to do?

Son has been accepted and we are planning a visit. We're out of state and have never been to Cleveland area. Any suggestions for a good place to stay? Things to do? Good student-type food? Any precautions we should know about?

I thought it would be a good idea NOT to rent car, that way we can try out the public transport, see things that are easily accessible without a car, since he will not have a car if he attends.

Son is doing an "Experience Case" visit with an overnight. He'll be busy all day on Friday so I thought I would hit the museums in the area. Anything a prospective student just must see on Saturday??

Thanks!

Place to stay: might be a little harder to handle without a car. The Glidden House is right on campus and might be a good choice for that reason. I'm pretty sure that the hospitals close to the Cleveland Clinic would also be reasonable in their proximity to public transportation (although I don't know for sure...my family always drives when they come to Cleveland and tend to stay at hotels further from campus).

Things to do: Cleveland has a lot to offer. Consider seeing an orchestra performance in Severance Hall (right on campus). Heading downtown to the Rock Hall of Fame, Science Center, etc is something that's neat to do and helps give a good feel of the city. I haven't had a car, and really haven't had much need for one, because of how great the public transportation is. If the city isn't your thing (and if the weather is decent) I would suggest renting a car and heading to the MetroParks (or further south to the Cuyahoga national park)...it's great to see so many parks in a city like Cleveland.

Good student-type food: For this I would recommend heading up to Coventry or taking a walk through Little Italy. Case runs a shuttle bus that goes to Coventry in the evenings. It's a nice place that many students go on weekends to grab something to eat (Resturaunts include: Chipotle, Que Tal, Mongolian BBQ, sub shops, pizza, Winking Lizard, etc). Little Italy is within a 5 minute walk from campus and has quite a variety of italian resturaunts; Mama Santa's pizza seems to be the favorite.

Public Transportation: Check out http://www.gcrta.org/ ahead of time to get familiar with the routes and fare choices. Students at Case do get an unlimited RTA pass each semester, so it is an excellent way to get around. There is a train route that has 2 stops on Case's campus (also stops at a mall, and eventually ends at the airport). I've used the train to get to the airport many times, and it's probably easier than the drive would be :-)

Here are some lodging sites:

If you do not have a car, you would want to stay at Glidden House or Baricelli Inn, or possibly University Circle Bed and Breakfast, to be within the campus. Alcazar Inn and the InterContinental hotels are nearby, but would be a very long walk.

If you have a car, you could do a search on the town Beachwood, OH, where there are numerous chain hotels. If you book a flight with a frequent flyer account, often you can get a nice discount on a rental car at the same time. Unless you are very busy w/ Case programs during your stay, I would recommend having a car to get a better feel for the area.

All of the University Circle attractions are easily accessible on foot from the campus.

thanks!

I'll consider a car. Any suburbs to search besides Beachwood?

If you go with a car in Cleveland, look into staying downtown at Hampton Inn. Very nice for price, ask for Case discount rate. We stay there when visiting son in fall. If you do anything in downtown area, you can leave car all day you check out and visit Rock N Roll HoF, Science Museum, other lakefront attractions and walk from hotel. Save on downtown parking fees.

If this is your first vist to Case, I really recommend The Glidden House . It will give you the best feel for the campus. They have on-site parking if you do have a car.

If you have time while son is doing campus visiting stuff, walk over to University Circle and go to the Historical Society for a nice quick history of Cleveland. The museum is a newish building attached to an old mansion. Euclid Ave. used to have a couple hundred mansions, most gone now. Many of the big names in Cleveland's & CWRU's history lived there. Fascinating.
