My sister is a rising HS senior from Virginia and is very interested in South Carolina. She and my parents will be driving down tonight and touring campus tomorrow morning. She is interested in becoming a Speech Pathologist and is going to speak with a professor in the Communication Science and Disorders (CSD) program. Is there anything I should definitely tell her to see while she's there to make her trip special? If anyone knows anything I could tell her about the CSD program, that would be a bonus. She's hoping to get one of their scholarships that would allow her to pay in-state tuition to make it more affordable. She is a full IB diploma candidate. Does SC give strong consideration to IB students? Thanks for any information!

Look at money matters link on admissions site to see what scholarship requirements are and which scholarships waive/reduced OOS tuition. IB (and AP) are looked at as student doing most rigorous course work. Search the USC website to see what she can get credit for with her IB scores. USC is very generous with accepting AP so I assume it is similar for IB. If her scores qualify her for honors college maybe try to stop by their office as well. Be aware that tomorrow is exam day for one of the summer school sessions but I’m not sure that would affect anything she would do. Definitely wander around Horseshoe and campus in am since we seem to be having afternoon showers all this week.

If she has time, check out Five Points for some cute shops and good food. There’s a Starbucks but also local Drip coffee shop and Gourmet Shop. Places I consider USC favorites are Grouchos or Andy’s for sandwiches and Yesterday’s.

Thanks so much! I will pass it along. Not sure if she qualifies as of right now for honors. She told me that she got a 1300 (M&CR) on the SAT the first time but plans on taking it one more time in October and hopes to get it over 1400. She said she has a 3.8 unweighted and 4.4 weighted GPA so that should work in her favor since she’s full IB. Hope she likes it and doesn’t get washed out with the rain.

Be careful with IB exams! I had a lot of friends who did IB and USC wouldn’t take Standard Level IB exam scores… only HL. (I think under the IB diploma, you only do 2 or 3 courses at HL).

If she’s a rising senior, I definitely recommend that she takes the AP exams for any of the classes she’s doing at Standard Level. As SCMom said, USC is very generous with AP. And IB is good prep for the AP exams.

If she likes coffee, tell her to check out Cool Beans. It’s across the street from the Horseshoe. Yesterday’s in Five Points was also a great suggestion!
