Visiting Barnard (NYC area in general) Hotels?

I’m a first time poster here so I’m not exactly sure if I’m posting my question in the right place. Sorry about that if I am. I’ll take the post down if that’s the case.
Anyways, I’m going to tour Barnard over spring break (and possibly NYU or Columbia) and I’m having a rather hard time finding a cheap hotel to stay at. My family can’t afford anything over $120 a night and we really want to avoid staying in the Newark area because the highways and train systems there are just way to confusing for us to ever want to handle, again. So, if any of you Barnard students or parents know of a cheap and clean (I’m not to picky about the quality. I just need a bed and a toilet, honestly) place to stay, it would be really awesome if you could recommend a place. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person who needs help finding a place to stay in NYC.

BTW, we’re fine with staying in the neighboring boroughs as long as there’s a simple way to get into the city.

Thanks!! :)

Wow. I am really not sure about finding a place to stay in the NYC area for under $120 per night. We have never found anything for that price in Manhattan.

But I did find this after doing a quick search:

[Long Island City - Queens Hotels near New York - Book Long Island City - Queens Hotels in New York, New York | Expedia](Book Top Hotels near Charlotte Airport (USA) from $56 | Expedia)

Evidently Long Island City in Queens is relatively inexpensive. And accessible via transit.

Good luck!

There is a hostel a few blocks from campus that is pretty cheap … I think it is on Amsterdam Avenue … if you don’t mind the spartan facilities it is pretty cheap.

Union theological seminary is pretty good. [Landmark Guestrooms - Union Theological Seminary](http://www.utsnyc.edu/page.aspx?pid=520)
I think it’s like 130 a night, and it’s practically on campus

I recommend “On the Ave”, which is around Broadway and 77th.

It is about $200 a night, which is cheap for New York City.

I once stayed in Newark, and it is such a pain in the butt to get into New York City that it makes no sense to go that route.

Spend the extra money, and make your life a little easier.

$120 a night is bound to result in staying in a dump.

My parents always stayed at the Days Inn on 94th? 95th? and Broadway mostly because it was very cheap. I still live in Morningside Heights and now they stay at the Hotel Newton, on Broadway between 95 and 96 which is also pretty cheap.
They want to try the Aloft Harlem, which is on 125th right at the A/B/C/D stop - a bit east of Morningside Heights, but not more than a 20 minute walk from campus.
The hostel 3togo mentioned is on Amsterdam around 103rd St. - it’s the Hostelling International hostel.

I’d recommend looking through the NYC Tripadvisor forums as well; the posters there are really helpful in terms of finding cheap hotels for visitors.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! And yeah it looks like it’ll be hard to find a place to stay for under $120…
@churchmusicmom: it is relatively simple to get to Barnard from Long Island? I considered looking there but I wasn’t sure if it was going to be another similar-to-Newark transportation fiasco.

Using Trip Adviser found
Morningside Inn, not too far from Barnard
Verve in Long Island City-easy subway ride away
Chelsea Lodge, LIC
Howard Johnson Inn, LIC
If you get a room under $150, book it

It’s Long Island CITY, not Long Island (if you start searching Long Island you could end up far from Barnard). Long Island City is a neighborhood in Queens just over the East River, so it’s close to Manhattan. And as long as you’re near a subway stop, you’ll be able to get to Barnard just fine. You’ll probably need to transfer, but it won’t be hard.

I have stayed at Park 79 a number of times and liked it.

Hotel Newton is pretty close and at least the two days I checked the reservation for, was under $200. It’s in a nice area, broadway and 96th approximately

from Frommer’s - I never stayed there, just saw it was close to my D’s apartment
otel Newton Review

On the northern edge of the Upper West Side, the Newton is one of the best choices in the city in the inexpensive category. As you enter the pretty lobby, you’re greeted by a uniformed staff that’s attentive and professional. The rooms are generally large, with good, firm beds, a work desk, and a sizable bathroom, plus roomy closets in most (a few of the cheapest have wall racks only). Some are big enough to accommodate families, with two doubles or two queen beds. The suites feature two queen beds in the bedroom, a sofa in the sitting room, plus niceties such as a microwave, minifridge, and iron, making them well worth the few extra dollars. The bigger rooms and suites have been upgraded with cherrywood furnishings, but even the older laminated furniture is much nicer than I usually see in this price range

We stayed at the Newton. We liked it. The prices vary with time, so check the dates on line.

First of all, thank you for all your helpful posts. A lot of the hotels looked like really awesome places to stay.
In the end my mom dug up her old hilton honors card, renewed it and we were able to book a Hampton Inn in Times Square for just $139 a night. And on hotels.com, expedia etc. the same hotel was listed for $312 a night. So, I highly recommend a Hilton Honors card now. It doesn’t cost anything and from what it seems it has paid off. Of course the deal we got might be just due to the season and the location…
