Visiting Boston

I am in Boston this weekend for the first time. I am from Hawaii and I have never really visited a big city. Any recomendations on food, shopping, site seeing, etc. Or any good advice.

Thanks mucho. :)

Do the Freedom Trail; have pizza & Italian dessert in the North End; take the T to Cambridge. Boston doesn't disappoint: have fun.

^^I agree. Plus have some New England clam chowder at Legal Seafoods.

You might want to check out some of the cows on the Cow Parade. There are over 100 cows that have been painted by various artists that have been placed all around the city. They will be auctioned off in the fall to benefit the Jimmy Fund. I'm planning to get into the city next week to start my search. Some have cute names: Make Way for Calflings; Fanny, the Fenway Park Cow; The Mooflower; Cowtucket; you get the idea. I guess it makes sense when you think the roads in Boston were originally cow paths, and when you remember the Red Sox battle cry of 2003: Cowboy Up!

Shopping-hit the Pru and Newbury St.
Other advice-Take the T! Driving in the city is awful and confusing, and the subway is cheap. It will help save money on taxis.

If you need anything else, just pm me. I live 15 minutes from the city.

food:
there are plenty of hidden jewels in the North End (Italian)

for seafood, the Union Oyster House is a great traditional place http://www.unionoysterhouse.com/

shopping:
Newbury Street and Copley Place are the upscale shopping locations

take the T

One of the trolleys will give a nice overview. If the weather is good Quincy Market is nice to walk, Cheers has nice food. We took a Spirit of Boston dinner cruise and the kids (teens) enjoyed the dancing and entertainment. The Boston Pass was a nice feature to sitesee from the top of the Prudential, JFK Museum, Aquarium, Harvard Museum of Natural History and anoth item or two for a reduced "packaged price". Overall experinece was good, people friendly.

Along the Freedom trail, you will pass the front to bar featured in TV series "Cheers".
If you have time, take a tour to Lexington & Concord, and see the museum about the revolutionary war. If you are there on July 4, you'll see reenactments. Even the cemeteries are interesting.

For an unconventional way to "see the sights", try a Duck Tour. They leave from the Prudential Center and the Science Museum; try to arrive early and buy tickets because they sell out fast! The Duck Boats are amphibious buses from WWII and the tour guides are known for being funny and off-beat.

Bring an umbrella. :(

the sausage guy. 138 cambridge street.

Dim Sum..........China Town, always a fun and delicious experience.

FENWAY PARK!!!! Watching the Red Sox is a must!

Tickets are nearly impossible to Fenway.. :-(

Buying tickets from the box office -- nearly impossible. Buying tickets scalped during the day of the game, not impossible by any means. Just name your price and stick to it, you'll get tickets with no problem. Usually for a very fair price. Basic negotiating skills will come in handy. Unless the Yankees are in town.

Visit my daughter - she's in town for the weekend too! We're going to pick her up on the way to Maine tomorrow. Agree with the umbrella comment, looks like a couple of soggy days on the east coast.

duckboat tour....worth the money, its not that long, and you can see a lot you may not get to otherwise

The glass flowers in the Harvard Museum of Natural History are amazing. Brought tears to my eyes.

agree on Duck toar...fun thing to do..I went to the Harvard museum of natural History!(one of 2 times in life ive seen/been on harvard campus) my sister used to go to college in boston it was a college owned by Lesley college in Cambridge. So we went to that museum once and the other time was seeing harvard b/c we had to go thru area to go to deans house for a gathering b4 graduation.(house is in cambridge) I agree on T its a great way to travel i love going on it...i have some funny injurys b/c of me trying to grab upper bar in the T when i was just a little to short(I Was 9-10)

thanks for all of the suggestions so far.
what are some of the colleges i should look at in boston?
so far I am visiting BC and BU. my grades aren't the greatest and i think i would be a good match for BU. are there any other colleges in the area that I could possibly get into. i have completely fallen in love with boston and i would loveeeee to go here for college.

I am going on the little ghost tour thing tomorrow night probably. How is it?

Also, any suggestions or concerns about safety. I am a real novice when it comes to city life and I am not used to all of the homeless people, etc. Any words of wisdom?

Thanks for all of the help so far. I am going shopping on Newbury St. and Copley Place tomorrow hopefully. And I want to see the art gallery. So much to do with so little time!!
