Visiting Brown during their Spring Break

I’ve been planning this trip to visit my sister in NYC since January (well, I’m past the planning stage since I have my tickets now…) and part of the trip was visiting Brown. I was pretty psyched since I’m in love with Brown (will apply ED later this year), but, today I realized that Brown is on Spring Break when I’m going to visit. So right now, I can either, a) visit Brown during their SB just to walk around the campus or b) not go at all

I’m pretty much leaning towards B) because I know I can tour the Brown campus online any day, and I was really looking forward to actually talking to Brown students and possibly sitting in on a class. Any opinions on what I should do?

No, there's probably no point. Come back in a month when the weather is nicer and there are students on campus. And NYC isn't so close to Providence, but I guess if you're in California it is. haha

You should definitely go. Online barely begins to convey the vibe that is Brown. Providence is so cool and laid back. If you get bored with Brown, you can see what the city has to offer. It's such an awesome and attractive and well planned city. It is worth checking out, I think.

cannedish- where in NorCal are you from?

Unless you have a really good reason not to, I'd say go for it. They'll still be giving tours - and those are guided by students. Not every student leaves Brown for the week of Spring Break. I was at Yale for Spring Break, and while I couldn't get the entire picture, it certainly gave me a better idea than I'd otherwise have.

Why not wait until your summer break to come visit? Brown will be on break then too but there will be more students around taking summer classes and doing research. If you know you will apply to Brown ED anyway you may also want to wait until the fall.

we do give tours during our spring break. however, class isn't in session and students won't be around to give it the wonderful brown feel.

And most northeast schools look SO much better in the summer.

I think it makes a big difference whether the campus is lively or not. I visited some schools during the summer before they were in session (again, if you visit in the summer this may also be a problem..if they're on summer break, you won't get a really realistic feel either) and some of them felt dead...some others I really liked but then realized that I had no idea what the students were like.

So, idk, if it's convenient to drive up to Providence (it's like a good 2+ hour drive from nyc) then you should visit bc you don't know when you're going to get another chance to, but expect that it's going to be different than when classes are in session.

Visit if you don't think you'll get another chance, but if you can go when students are there, definitely go for that.

Zante, driving to NYC from here is more like 3.5-4 hours. So that's even less of a convenient trip.

Calidan: I'm from the Walnut Creek area

Well, the original plan was to take a bus to Providence from NYC, tour/explore Brown, do the overnight stay, and then make my way to Boston from there (my sister has class/work so she wouldn't be able to go with me).

If I go, do you think it would be possible to take the bus to Providence, tour/explore Brown, and come back to NYC all in one day? Or should I try to make arrangements to stay overnight in Providence. I really wouldn't want to do the latter, since I'm trying to make this trip as cheap as possible.

Really astroalex? because it takes about 4hours to get to Boston...maybe my dad just drives fast. lol

and yes cannednish, I think it's possible to do a day trip. I visited both Brown and Yale in one day, so you should be able to do one school.

You will be in transit for 7-8 hours. I've gone to NYC a few times on the big commercial busses and it takes 3.5-4 hours each way. So if you leave early in the morning you can tour and then get back in the evening. You will be on the bus A LOT though. haha

Ahh, the bus would be slower...although I have taken a bus to boston that was only 4 hours =/

Idk but a day trip is very possible.

So I've decided that I'm going to go, and it's going to be about 7 hours of total bus riding, but that's not too bad. It's basically like:

Leave 7:30, arrive Providence 11:30
1 PM tour
Leave providence at 6:05, arrive back at NYC at 10ish

For any of you that know Providence and/or Brown, how far of a walk is Kennedy Plaza from Brown?

I really like Providence. It's such a cute little city. :)

I wish I had explored it more, but I had to hurry off to visit Yale that day. I hear the mall is spectacular. But yea Providence is a nice size I think. Not too big but not rural. Rhode Island is a cute state.

Kennedy Plaza is right near the Brown campus, with RISD directly in between the two. Just walk away from the "skyscrapers" towards the big sciences library building. lol

http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/libs/scili/

You can see the building from parts of the city I live in which is about a 15 minute drive from Providence. Have fun! I hope the weather is good that day.

Thanks everyone for your help! Wow, if the Brown board is a microcosm of the people at Brown....I really want to go. Haha, I'm just a junior and I can feel that Brown love creeping up on me! :)

Speaking of the SciLi... I miss the donkey!

And, cannednish, you're pretty cool yourself. I hope to see you in 2 years!
