If you live in the NYC area, what train do you take up to Dartmouth? Do you leave from Penn Station? And how long is it usually.. I can't seem to find this out. Thanks!

The train is the "Vermonter" it leaves Penn Station and takes over 6hrs to get to White River Junction, VT. From there you'd need to take a taxi (about an $10 trip).

Oh yeah, it only leaves once per day. Training it isn't the best way to get to campus.

you drive or fly into burlington and rent a car.

if you cant or dont rent a car take bus from burlington vermont transit
has a web page with times ..it stops in front of hanover inn by the green or at white river junction

jet blue to burlington from kennedy

if your closer to philly southwest air to manchester nh (cheap)
and take vermont transit 22 bucks

Depending on when you book you can now take fly Jet blue from JFK to logan for as low as $35 each way. Last time D came home she booked a flight last minute and it was $40 each way. On the weekend the flight will cost you about $60 each way.

the flight is one hour. From logan you can take the dartmouth coach ($55) rount trip to campus.

daughter said she will never take the bus or train again she feels it is so worth the expense to fly because you now get there in half the time.

You can even take the airtrain ($5) to JFK from either jamaica station 7 minutes from penn station on the LIRR or howard beach

http://www.mta.info/mta/airtrain.htm

on the weekend the LIRR cost $3 each way fom manhattan to bklyn or queens (jamaica station)

It is almost the same price as taking grey hound from port authority (7 hr ride)

coming up on amtrak is almost 7 hours.

hope this helps

the upside to amtrak is if you book 7 days in advance and you are traveling with one of your parents, book your trip through campus visit and one parent travels free.

http://www.campusvisit.com/

my daughter has only travelled to dartmouth by train one time but she enjoyed the ride. she said there were many other dartmouth students on the train so it was easy to pass the time.

Cheapest is to take the $15 bus from NYC to Boston (Fung Wah, if from Chinatown, or Greyhound, if from Port Authority), then transfer (in the same bus station) to Dartmouth Coach, which takes you right to Hanover Inn for $30. The entire trip takes about 6 to 7 hours, about the same as the train, but much cheaper.

During the school year there are special buses directly between NYC and Dartmouth for all the major breaks. It's of course full of Dartmouth students.

So, you have many options!

The only down side to the special buses is that they sell out really really fast. For thanksgiving the buses were sold out in 2 hours and when they added additional buses those seats also went quickly. while the special buses are a good option to have, don't make it your only option for gettting back home.l

Not sure if this is relevant anymore, but I think if you're looking to go cheap, you should check out greyhound. Book a week in advance and it's only $41 one way and you don't have the hassle of switching in Boston

Greyhound's 7 day advance purchase from NYC to Hanover is $62.00 each way

It has been my experience, that you take one bus from NYC to Hanover and there was never any switching and the bus never stopped in Boston

we live just outside NYC and daughter takes train to white river junction. it's inexpensive, and she can get up and walk around if she wants. they sell food. and there are plugs for her laptop or dvd player.

without even considering the cost issue, it's also just easier.

to fly you have to travel to the airport, get there at least half an hour in advance, take the one hour flight, have time to connect to the bus, and spend 3 3/4 hours on the bus to the hanover inn. even if you only live half an hour from the airport and time it perfectly and have no traffic, it's still a 6 1/2 hour trip if you fly/bus. not really different from the train and you don't have to worry about connections.

on holiday breaks the local taxi company sends multiple cars and vans to the train station and takes the students to campus based on where they live. with a lot of luggage, it's easier than even walking from the hanover inn back to the dorm.

oops, sorry. I meant to say 3 1/4 hour bus from Logan to the Hanover Inn, so a total of 6 hours for the plane/bus trip.

It's $82 round trip if you use the goanywhere fares. But, it does depend on what day of the week you're going

EDIT: oh yeah, I think I'm charged a small fee to do it online, maybe 4 or 5 dollars.

Wow thanks for all the helpful responses!

About 3 hours to get to logan (depending on traffic) need to be at the airport at least 45 minutes before flight so that is about 4 hours, (D will take the 9:00 coach for a 1 pm flight) although they state the flight is 1 hour, she has always gotten in early. Since we live in queens, it shaves off the hour it takes for us to get out of the city and into Queens so she will actually be in our house by 2:15 once she leaves the airport.
