Visiting Cal Poly

Hey, I’m visiting Cal Poly this week from out of state and I was wondering if there was anything I should check out in particular at Cal Poly and in San Luis Obispo. Also, I was admitted for Biomedical Engineering and wanted to sit in on a class when I was down there, does anyone know how I would go about setting that up? Also, is there a way to check out the dorms too?

Thanks!

Contact the admissions office. CalPoly has some standard tours that we took that give you a good overview of the school and campus. I know they will also set up sessions to see some of the “hands on” projects in action. I’m not sure about seeing a class with no advanced notice, but Admissions is the place to contact to see what can be done.

You could e-mail the department chair or a professor and ask them if it’s possible to sit in, I’m pretty sure most of them would be happy to let you. Or if you’re already here, you could go to the department and just ask. I would also check out the campus of course and the town of San Luis Obispo. It’s a really charming town with some great shops and restaurants. For fun, you could go to the Madonna Inn, Morro Bay, or Hearst Castle which is about a 45 minute drive. Firestone’s is a great BBQ/grill restaurant in downtown SLO that extremely popular with Cal Poly students if you’re looking for a place to eat. If you want to go to the beach, check out Pismo or Avila. Oh, and if you happen to be here on a Thursday night, Farmer’s Market on Higuera is something you definitely should not miss!

Here’s a pretty good thread on where to stay: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/677054-where-stay-when-visiting-cal-poly.html?highlight=quality+inn</a>
When you take the tours you might ask your tour guide, always a student, if they could help you check out the dorms.
Welcome to Cal Poly!

Thanks you guys! That all sounds amazing… Each day I’m getting more pumped for Cal Poly, but the price tag as an out of stater is kinda high, but for the great education, from what I have heard it is definitely worth it! I will definitely check out the farmers market and Pismo beach, and hopefully everything else you guys suggested! I can’t wait for Cal Poly :)

Have a great visit islandgirl!!! I was just there with my son yesterday! The weather was a mix of clouds and sun, but I think you will get a little rain. The campus is not huge, so you will enjoy walking around all of it. The town is adorable and of course the beach is nice. Just the view of beautiful green hills all around is amazing!

My son and I actually went on a tour of the BioMedical Engr. department. We also went a personal Materials tour because we missed our scheduled one due to an accident on the freeway. (we were not involved thankfully!) We were impressed with both departments and enjoyed the enthusiasm of the tour guides.

Congrats on getting accepted and have a great visit. let us know how it went!

Cal Poly has a very active Society of Women Engineers club (SWE). They can probably arrange a private tour for you if you contact them.

Thanks momofmv! are you guys from California? I’m definitely used to the rain, I’m from the Seattle area, hahah, but it’ll be nice to be in a lighter rain and have it be warm!

That’s good that you guys weren’t involved with the accident!

The description of campus, town and the beaches you gave sounds amazing! I’m so excited to see it!!

I’m glad that you liked both the departments and that the tour guides were enthusiastic!! What major did your son get accepted for?

Thanks! Congrats to your son too! Is he going to Cal Poly for sure? I will definitely let you guys know how it goes and what my final decision is

And thanks I will definitely check out the SWE!

Since you are visiting this week keep in mind that the hills are brown most of the year. They are only green now because it’s the rainy season and we’ve been hit pretty hard this year. Just don’t want you to get a false impression while you visit! Congrats on your admittance and have a safe trip!!

Husband, daughter and I were at Cal Poly over the past weekend as well - yes - those hills are super green . . . for now! Daughter loves Cal Poly and is excited to be going there. She knows several freshman and has stayed in Sierra Madre with them over a weekend back in January - drove down with a friend and had a great time. Although we didn’t get a chance to go there, I hear Big Sky Cafe in downtown SLO is “THE place to eat.”

Firestone Grill gets my vote …

…both very popular restaurants here in SLO. You will have fun trying out all the great places to eat here when you visit your daughter during her years at CP!

You guys are killin me! I gotta find an excuse to go visit my son . . . :)

Absolutely slodad! Plus of course trying out (again) some of the GREAT wineries in Paso Robles . . .

For sure! There are a few in San Luis to try as well! Edna Valley, Tolosa, Talley to name a few.

Right! We haven’t checked out any of the SLO or Santa Barbara wineries yet - but will definitely put these on the list - thanks very much!

OK, enough with the wineries! I clearly made a bad deal letting my wife take my daughter on the Cal Poly tour. I got the Montana route in February.

Brrrrrrrrrrr. :)

Hey, Islandgirl, I’m from Seattle too! I got into Cal Poly early decision to animal science; I sent you a PM.

You’re welcome islandgirl!

Yes, we are from the Bay Area in California. We like nice weather :)

My son is in the Materials Engineering Major. he is really leaning towards Cal Poly, but he still has some decisions to make. He has been accepted to 4/7 schools he has applied to. The last 3 are UCs that haven’t released decisions yet.

have an awesome visit and I can’t wait to hear what you think about it.
