I was deferred from Wharton with a solid application (2360 SAT, 35 ACT, 3.85ish GPA, leadership in extracurriculars, several thousand dollar business, my best essays) and I'm wondering why. I know that college decisions are random to a slight degree, but I truly believed that this school was perfect for me and me for it.

So, I pose this question to all those accepted: did you ever visit the campus? Or, perhaps more pertinent - did any of you NOT visit?

Visiting doesn’t matter that much, especially with EDs who show interest b/c they are in fact ED.

There could be a million reasons from your class rank, to how you came across in your essays, to misleading the admissions committee (did you inflate the hours you spend on activities?).

Penn is pretty much the only ivy that weights interest, but applying ED already shows about as much interest as you can show. . .visiting might help a tiny bit but I’m not sure. I live on the other side of the country from Penn but visited 3 times; I just got accepted to Wharton. I’m not sure if this really means anything though because I’m also a URM from a state that sends under 10 kids a year to Penn. I’m sorry you were deferred but it isn’t the end of the world; try sending an additional letter to the school explaining how/why wharton is still your #1 choice and tell them about any changes in scores or a new rec letter or something. Best of luck to you during RD
