Visiting shows that you're interested enough to travel out and spend a day visiting. It also means that you have a clearer idea of the school's atmosphere and "intangibles" like fit. In general, it helps, although it's more important to some schools than to others.

Usually when you arrive on campus, you can check in at the admissions office - at the schools I went to, I had to fill out cards with my name and address so they knew I'd been there.

oh...ok...i really wanted to visit some schools but im not really sure if i can get into many colleges i apply to...and+ the biggest problem..i have to travel alone...i dont live with my parents...

As I said, visiting helps - but if you're not able to visit, don't worry about it. It reinforces your application, but ultimately it's not a dealbreaker, just the icing on the cake if your app is already strong. And there are other ways to display interest in a school, like requesting information, or contacting admissions/coaches/professors with questions.

another way to demonstrate interest is to attend presentations given in your area. There will be a sign-up sheet. Also you can contact the admissions office and ask to be put in contact with current students from your area so that you can meet them for coffee or something when they are home on Xmas break.

Its worth noting for the benefit of people reading this thread that some schools give a lot of weight to demonstrated interest (think WUSTL, Tufts, etc), others don't care (most state U's, many top colleges like Harvard and Stanford, etc). So you need to find out about the specific ones you are considering.
