Visiting Case and Seeking Advice

Our student will be visiting Case in April and we have a couple questions -
Rent Car or Uber? We plan to stay close to campus, or near mass transit. So do we need a car? Easy enough to uber from airport? Besides the things included in admitted student day activities, anything else specifically we should see? While the student is participating at campus, we’ll be taking in everything around University Circle - I know there is lots to see and do, but is there anything in particular about the campus you think is a positive or a negative that we should see during our visit? TIA

Hi we are at CW right now for EA admitted students weekend. If you stay at the Glidden House you will not need a car. We are here now and it is right in University Circle. This is the closest place. I would say in cold weather you would want a car but otherwise you can walk everywhere from here! Hotel is fantastic and free breakfast is amazing. We didn’t do too much besides the school visit and my daughter did the overnight stay option. We did hit Mitchell’s for ice cream and that was too good. Museum of Art is literally right around the corner. Many other things to see and do within a 5 min walk. Have fun!

There is a train (rapid transit) that can take you from the airport to near campus. You could lyft/uber from there.

I would check out some of the museums…you could also go to downtown Cleveland (also via rapid transit) and maybe see the Rock and Roll Museum.

@mom517 Thanks for your posting your info.
We are planning March end weekend . Please guide us with your findings and places around and also places to stay for parents .
Is Glidden House is only hotel around there or anything else?

@Gjessi2020 - There is a Courtyard by Marriott very close to campus. Nice hotel. The Tudor Arms (Hilton) is also walkable. We tend to use Hilton hotels but had a really bad experience at the Tudor. The Intercontinental is close by. If you have transportation, the downtown hotels are pretty convenient as are hotels in the Beachwood - lots of options & price points.

Lots of restaurants in Little Italy which is an easy walk from campus. L’Abatros is probably one of the closest restaurants and is a very nice place for lunch or dinner. The Coventry area is also another area to check out.

Enjoy your visit in March

@Gjessi2020 (My son graduated Case a few years ago)

The first visit to Case, in 12th grade, we did not rent a car, so he could learn the train to Case Western. Its probably a bit less stress to rent a car the first time, but we knew the second visit, drop off, we would want a car for the suitcases, so we decided to take the train the first time.

Glidden House, on campus, is super nice and convenient , but
is often books six months in advance, I tried to get a room there about five times, over five years, and finally gave up. They never had openings even in the dead of winter, during February visits, I made two visits in February, as my son had a winter wind ensemble concert, and we visited the first time for music auditions in February as well, when he was in high school.

I have stayed at Washington Place Bistro and Inn, which is walking distance to Case, and offers free parking and free simple breakfasts, with a nice fancy brunch for free, if you stay on a Friday or Saturday night. Its an older house with no elevator, but helpful staff, , nice dinner restaurant on first floor , and clean rooms.

Another place to eat lunch or dinner, is that the Cleveland Art Museum, walking distance to campus.
There is a lower end cafeteria there , that I like, and the museum is free admission every day.
I have not tried the fancier restaurant at the museum, but wish I had tried it.

Right across from Washington Place Bistro and Inn, is an expensive Italian restaurant called Nora:

There are lots of lower priced Italian restaurants, and don’t miss the bakery, Presti’s on Mayfield.

@Gjessi2020 Beachwood, is a town to the east, is a very safe and nice town, offers less expensive hotels, if you do decide to bring a car. We have stayed out there as well, its a few miles to the east of University Circle. I think its better to stay in the University Circle Marriot or Washington Place Inn, if you prefer to walk everywhere.

If I was staying in Beachwood, I would rent a car.

Downtown is about 4 miles to the west, and you could take the Healthline Bus back and forth, but I would rent a car if you want to stay downtown, as well. Downtown has good restaurants too, and the Lake Erie waterfront is nice. Playhouse Square is absolutely beautiful in Cleveland-

The Arcade Cleveland is fun for shopping and eating downtown-

This chain restaurant is fun, at the Arcade downtown Cleveland.

There is so much to do in University Circle, that you may want to save downtown for a different visit.
Cleveland is very easy to drive, not a lot of traffic, as its a smaller city.

We are scheduled to go early April and staying at the Glidden House to avoid a rental car.

This is a comprehensive Cleveland hotel list.
Tudor Arms Hotel offers shuttle services all around town. I guess its older though, I have not stayed there, see
other reviewer above.

Can anyone speak to the train from the airport to (where?) near campus?

There are two train stops, near Case Western. Little Italy and Cedar. Cedar is closer to freshman dorms.

See this map. Take the Red Line, get off at Cedar. Its nicely rebuilt.

Be prepared to take about a 20-30 minute train ride. Its about 15 minute drive by car, but by the time
you rent, it will be faster to take the train.

The train goes by one area of high graffiti, but I did not feel overly alarmed by it. That could
even be spruced up by now, I saw that in 2013. Economy is great in Cleveland.

I went back for my 30th reunion and we stayed at a Air BnB on Lakeshore Blvd nearby.

I think we’ll just cab it. Thanks.

I know there are some people on this thread close to CWRU - so I’m asking the question here. If a person wanted to give feedback on an experience during the CWRU admitted students weekend, how is it best to do that? We had a really bad experience with an admissions officer that was coordinating the tours on the weekend we were there, and while not the only factory, it definitely had an impact on how our student felt about considering CWRU. It was so disappointing and we really felt bad for an otherwise very nice group of administrators that were trying to put their best foot forward. Should I give feedback and share our experience? We did make note of the person’s first name. If so, any suggestions for the best point of contact? TIA

I think I would try Bob McCullough, Dean of Admissions

^ ok. Appreciate the recommendation.

The RTA red line train from the airport to CWRU (Cedar or Little Italy stations) is very convenient. However, track construction/repair is shutting down parts of the red line 3 June - 13 July and they are doing 66R bus service around the construction. See http://www.riderta.com/routes/redline for updates.
