Visiting Chicago Next Week

I'm almost definitely going to Chicago in the fall, and I'm attending the overnight stay program next week. My dad insists on renting a car and driving in and around Chicago instead of using the great public transportation that the city provides. So, my question is, how difficult is it to drive in downtown Chicago, especially when one is unfamiliar with the city (we're from the Bay Area)? How convenient is public transportation, and do you recommend it over renting a car? I want to make our trip as stress-free as possible. Thanks!

Why are you going to Chicago? I wouldn't recommend it. Where else did you get in?

My parents rent a car when they come, but there really is no need. You probably won't be going anywhere that public transportation doesn't serve.

Enjoy your visit!

Driving around is not too bad if one stays off the expressways during rush hour, which unfortunately now runs from 6 AM until 9 PM. I find it convenient to have a car when visiting, but be prepared to pay for parking in a garage.

If it's your first time in Chicago, renting a car won't hurt and it'll allow you to see the whole city more easily (if that's your goal) than taking public transportation.

PS. Ignore lakerskingdom. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! We're renting a car, but we'll most likely be taking public transport to the university since parking will be such a hassle.

To the OP - if you don't mid a bit of a walk, there is usually parking across the midway plaisance. On the other hand, the last time we were there, my husband found a primo spot next to the President's house. Very convenient! As long as your folks are not parallel-parking impaired, you should be fine. Just be sure to allow for Chicago traffic in your time calculations.
