Hey guys,

I'm a prospective transfer (would be a sophomore next fall) and am visiting campus on a Friday in February. Does anyone have any suggestions for good classes to visit?

Here are the ones I was thinking about:
*ECON 277 Econ History of Financial Crises, F 9:40 - 10:40
*AMST 267 Utopia, Dystopia, and Myopia, F 1:10 - 2:10
*PHIL 226 Love and Friendship, F 12:00 - 1:00 PM
*RELG 265 Religion and Violence, F 1:10 -2:10

Thanks for your time and help!

If you post the profs’ names, you might find someone who can give you more specific feedback.

Or you could look up the profs on ratemyprofessor… that is what we did.

Thanks for the feedback everyone,

Are there any current Carleton students in a Friday class that they think is particularly awesome?

Hey, putting prospies/transfers into classes used to be my job in admissions! haha. At Carleton, almost all classes are either MWF or T/Th. I’m familiar with three of these classes/profs (not the econ class) so here’s my take.

AMST 267 has an interesting topic, but just FYI - the professor (Keiser) likes having visitors to the point where he might actually call on you while you’re there, so if you’re looking to quietly observe/blend in this may not be the class for you.
PHIL 226 is taught by one of my favorite professors (Moltchanova) and has the potential to have some really interesting discussion. It is pretty reading-based so they’ll probably be discussing reading, etc. but it should be interesting.
RELG 265 is supposed to be a pretty cool class as well; the prof (Sippy) is supposed to be good and a close friend of mine really likes it.

I would strongly caution you against simply dropping in on a random class unless you’re with a host, because some professors aren’t huge fans of that. Admissions usually has a list of classes (called the “drop in” list) that are available for visitors who come on short notice, but generally profs like to know beforehand if they’re going to have a visitor (one of my jobs in admissions was to email profs). At the very least, you should probably show up to the class a few minutes beforehand to let the professor know you’re visiting. Carleton professors are generally wonderful people, but especially if you’re visiting in February, you might end up in a class with a midterm unless you check beforehand.
