Visiting classes by prospective student

Hi everybody,

my daughter (h/s junior) is going to visit her friend at UCD. Her plan is to visit her friend’s language classes which might be my D’s interest, too.

My question is: what should she do to be allowed to visit those classes? Should she go to some office to obtain some kind of permit? How much time in advance should she do so? Or may she just show up at the classroom with her friend?

Thank you in advance.

Language classes are always very small, like 20 students max, so a professor will definately notice an extra student. You will want to show up at least 1 or 2 days before and go to the office of the language you are looking for. The building that houses all of the offices is Sproul Hall, and talk to anyone available and just try to get permission. She could also get her friend to ask if your daughter can go, that might even be the easiest and best choice. You must, however, get permission. If she wants to see some of the larger classrooms it's remarkably easy to do so since the lecture halls have like 200/300/400 students. Have fun in Davis!

I would just have your daughter's friend ask the professor if a visiting friend of hers could sit in on a few lectures. I believe it would be up to the professor's disgression whether or not it's ok. That's all that has been necessary the few times I've been in similar situations - granted, I've never taken a language class. I haven't heard of getting a permission slip or anything.
