Visiting Classes

For those of you who have visited colleges and sat in on classes, what is the acceptable procedure for doing so? Should you come early to the class and speak with the professor, or is is necessary to email them beforehand? I'm thinking more specifically about Williams and Amherst, but also in general. Thanks!

(we have similar names- how weird)
anyway, you should notify the professor that you'll be attending
whether by phone or email to make sure its ok and that they can expect you
don't go early and ask them as that puts them on the spot
also make sure that you spend the whole time there DONT leave early
so plan accordingly

okay, thank you!
what about: Brown provides a preselected list of classes available to visitors. In this case, should I contact a professor ahead of time or would that be unnecessary/bothersome? The list gives the course title and location, but no contact information. I'm assuming this means visitors are welcome to sit in without previous notice (except arriving early).

I would definitely arrive early to alert the professor you'll like to sit and watch the class. If it is a large, intro class (100+ students), you can drop by and leave without notice by sitting in the back of the room.
