Visiting Colleges in Maine/New England

Yeah, for sure. Maybe I’ll be able to go back next year and visit Williams as I’m only an upcoming junior, if I don’t feel great about the schools I look at this time

Visited Middlebury and Dartmouth today. Unfortunately, the Dartmouth tour was a bit rushed but it seemed like a cool place. I loved Middlebury but no merit scholarships seem like a big minus (unless I am not understanding something). And just saw Dartmouth’s average annual scholarship is $46.000 which is a huge plus.

No offense, but you need to do your homework a little better, Other than University of Vermont, NONE of the schools you have mentioned here offer merit scholarships. If you are looking for merit money, you need to revise your list.

“Dartmouth Scholarships are need-based and are given”
https://admissions.dartmouth.edu/financial-aid/apply-aid/prospective-transfer-students/types-financial-aid/grants-scholarships

If you need the merit money, you’re going to have to go down a peg or two in selectivity and/or look outside of New England.

If you are looking for merit aid and strong environmental programs, take a look at Dickinson and St. Lawrence in addition to Vermont.

Be aware averages don’t reflect your situation. They include the kids getting massive amounts and someone just getting 1k or so.

Dart and Midd are “need based only” and “meet full need.”

You fill out the fafsa and css profile (a necessary pita) and they decide what you need. Run the Net Price Calculators for each target. Links are on their FA pages.

Glad you liked them.

Ok. Wasn’t sure and that’s why I posted. I hadn’t researched much but someone told us about that like it was unusual. I honestly don’t know much, if anything, about how financial aid/scholarships work for college.

Do you know if you qualify for need based aid or not?

If you need aid, get something like “Financial Aid for Dummies.”

Run the NPCs. Unless your parents own a biz, are divorced, or a few other circumstances, it gives a good idea.

I know you’re a little way off from applying and just getting started in your search. This would be the time to talk to your parents about what they can afford and to run the NPCS for schools you like. There is nothing more disheartening than investigating and then loving schools you’d need to win the lottery to attend.

If you need merit (i.e., you’re not eligible for financial aid and your parents can’t be full pay), you will have to look at a different set of schools. They are also excellent, but they aren’t the ones on this list.

On a net price calculator, should income be put as total before/after taxes?

Nvmnd…there are sections for both

I agree Gardenstategal. I’ll try to fill out a NPC tomorrow after UVM and see if it’s even worth visiting the other schools. Last thing I would want is to get too attached to something that’s not attainable or unrealistic for me

Let us know what you find out and I’m sure we can all make some suggestions revisions to your list depending on the circumstances. Enjoy the Vermont visit and Burlington!
