I have been told that visiting colleges during the summer is pointless because getting a feel of the school is contingent upon interacting with the student body . To my surprise, UVM informed me that they held classes year round and that a visit during the regular school year would be no different than a summer visit. I can't imagine that this is the case for many other schools but I'm not sure. I would love to visit several campuses over the summer instead of cramming them all in September-October. Is UVM just a rare exception in this sense? If not, is there any way of knowing which colleges hold classes during the summer besides calling?

well, some places do have summer semesters. One place i know of is northeastern. I am guessing you will have to check the website for the colleges.

I wouldn't visit during the summer, even if there is a summer session. Usually summer session has a much smaller number of students on campus, many of whom might not even be regular students at the school, and a very limited section of the campus might be open.

The fall is a much better time to visit, imo.

It really is better to visit during the school year and if you can, stay with a real student, a freshman or sophomore. Otherwise you can get a feel for the physical look of the school but not the real scene.

Schools may have summer sessions, although it's probably not going to be much like what their fall/spring semesters are like. Staying the night is the best way to get a feel for a college you're seriously interested in attending.
