Visiting Dartmouth

DS received a likely letter and is very excited! We're planning a visit to Dartmouth in March.

Any suggestions for overnight lodging (reasonable or cheap)? What to visit while at the school to get a good overview of the school? Any must sees on campus?

If logistically possible, you should wait until April 19th-21st for their Dimensions weekend that they conduct for accepted students. One has to assume that the information and campus experience that you’ll get will be well beyond the standard visit. If a visit is something that might sway your DS’s decision to attend, this is the time to go . . .

Be aware that spring break is March 15 to 24. Not the best time to visit to get a feel for things.

Agreed that March is not a good time to visit: we’re about to start finals and then will be on spring break until the end of the month, so not a good time to be on campus. I would also second waiting for Dimensions; it’s a lot of fun and a good way to get a feel for the other people who will be your classmates. Even if you can’t wait for Dimensions, I’d still hold off til April or May if possible. (We also just got snow, so March will be muddy, yet another reason to wait.)

I would definitely wait for Dimensions.

as for cheap lodging the sunset motor lodge will do it

We stayed in White River Junction when we visited, which was awful… This local came out of nowhere and hit (hard) on my mother with my dad standing right next to her. Then he followed us to Hanover (my parents really like the Canoe Club) and told us how Hanover folks were a bunch of uptight ‘effers’. The next morning he harassed us during breakfast. It was totally random and had nothing to do with the school, but nonetheless it did give me a bad first impression…

If I remember right, the Hanover Inn is more expensive but is so much more convenient. It may be booked during Dimensions though, but I’m not sure.

We were in Hanover a couple of weeks ago. The Hanover Inn is undergoing massive renovations and I doubt it will reopen any time soon.

We always had a good time staying at the Courtyard by Marriott or Renaissance Inn in Lebanon NH (across from the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center).

There is also a new hotel in downtown Hanover but I don’t know its name.

the new hotel in Hanover is called is Sixth South St.

I’ve stayed in WRJ many of times, all without incident; White River Junction is also a quick drive into town, and less expensive. The Courtyard and Residence Inn are also close.

Queeche also has a couple of places, nearby Simon Pearce (a must for dinner/lunch).

Call/e-mail the Admissions office and ask what days Dimensions is planned…

Also there is a free bus system in Hanover ([Upper Valley Transportation Services](http://www.dartmouth.edu/~fom/services/parking/uvtrans.html)) I would suggest riding on one of the buses to get a feel of the area.

My daughter got a likely letter so we are just waiting for the official email on Thursday. We are visiting on the April 5th to 8th. Airfare is so high but it is the only time we can visit. Anyone else going next weekend?
