My daughter and I are visiting Elon in a few weeks. Is there anything on or off campus that we should not miss?

For dinner, I recommend Maria's Cafe, to the right of Lowe's. It's a great little Italian place that a couple of my friends work at.

I looked up Maria's Cafe and that looks like a great place for dinner. Thanks!

If you do not have room reservations yet, check out the Acorn Inn B&B on Haggard Ave.

Thanks! Can anyone give me more info about the town of Elon or the area immediately surrounding the campus? Are there any stores/restaurants within walking distance?

I am not real sure about Elon itself. Our guide on a recent trip told us there were a couple of diners and boutiques. There is a very nice new mall only a few miles away in Burlington. Maybe three miles? It has all the norm like Barnes and Nobles, Belks, etc.

As I remember there wasn't much within walking distance of campus -- perhaps a small cafe, but plenty of restaurants within a short drive.

There are a couple stores, restaurants, and a bar/grill all right next to the main part of campus. The majority of off campus stores and restaurants are on University Drive, South Church St, and Huffman Mill Road.

Make sure you see the new dining hall (next to Koury Business center)
It and the adjacent dorms (Collonades A & B) are really special. My sophmore daughter lives in Collonades B this year, and it's like living in a hotel compared with the other dorms...which are like living at summer camp.

The rec center is very nice and a pretty popular place on campus.

There a few little restaurants close to campus (near the train tracks). The Sidetrack Grill (110W Lebanon) is a very collegiate restaurant.

But almost everything else is a few miles away. At the intersection of I-40 and University drive there are a couple of very large retail complexes.
(I don't think I'd take a look at them...every city has the same stuff)

Check out the web for Burlington, it depends on what you like. There is a nice park in town with a great carousel if you like that type of thing.

Generally people don't come to Elon because of Burlington. Many students drive to Greensboro or Chapel Hill for other activies...

Harden dining hall has the best food in many students' opinion. Make sure you check everything out, there are many places in Harden you order something specific that isn't laid out already. (for instance, the grill offers many things other than the daily meal) I recommend asking a student you may know at Elon, maybe from your high school, to take you to the dining hall to show you what's good.

And just a reminder while you all are travelling to Elon, especially by Southwest, register your kids for their rapid rewards program. My d is one more plane ride away from her 2nd free round trip ticket. If you do not register with them right away at the very least save all your airline confirmations in a separate folder in you email, for when they do register. I did this and after she got her card just inputted all of the confirmation nos. and voila! Free round trip. She's in FL this weekend visiting a friend for only a $5 fee. It all started with her first trip visiting Elon until now her Soph year, so it accumulates fast. Have a nice visit!

Thanks everyone for the great advice. We're looking forward to our visit!
