Visiting friends at Harvard- a few logistics Qs

Hello,

So I'm hoping to visit some friends at Harvard in the coming months, but wanted to ask a few Qs about logistics before I tell them I'm coming.

First, would it be easy (assuming they and their roommate(s) were okay with it) to stay in their dorm room? At my home university, there aren't really any regulations about this, but I know each college is different. I would probably be there for 3 nights or so. Is there adequate space (I don't mind sleeping on the floor)? I think my friends are in the Quincy and Adams Houses...

Second, if I do have to pay for a hotel room, are there ones nearby/within walking distance of the university?

Third, what is the easiest way to get from the airport to Harvard? I don't mind taking the train if it's fairly direct, but I've only been to Boston a few times, so if there are a ton of line changes, I'd probably be looking at getting a shuttle or something...

Thanks so much- hope you're having a great break!

Why don’t you ask your friends? They’d be the best source of current info.

From the airport to Harvard Square:
Take the Silver Line to South Station. At South Station, take the Red Line subway in the direction of Alewife/Harvard Square. Get off at Harvard Square. It costs $1.75.

Staying with friends in dorm. My S had friends who stayed over with the agreement of his roommates, of course. As well, his inflatable mattress seems to have been much in demand!

If you do have to stay in a hotel, I suggest Irving House on Irving Street (look up the website). It’s 5 minutes’ walk from the Yard.

NSMom, I will verify with them before I arrive, of course, but we already tried planning it once and it didn’t work out due to our exam schedules. I didn’t want to get their hopes up that I’m visiting if it was logistically unrealistic for a college student on a tight budget. I also didn’t want to put them in an uncomfortable situation by asking if I can stay with them if there were policies against it, or not enough space.

Marite, thanks so much for the help! Appreciate it :)

And, of course, other info/advice is welcome!

I realized I have one more Q:

What is your midterm sched. typically like (I apologize if this call for a very vague answer)? I’m considering visiting for a few days a week or so after your spring break (mid-March, I believe). Is this usually an okay time to visit, or does it really depend on the class?

Thanks a lot, and happy holidays =)!

Hopefully you won’t have to stay in a hotel, Adams and Quincy both have good rooms and your friend should easily be able to find you a space to stay.

As for when to visit, there will probably be some midterms right after spring break, however, the vast majority tend to fall right before spring break. Granted, the calendar change has brought about so many differences in the academic calendar, but my assumption is that with spring calendar being similar to what it used to be, that midterm season will fall right before spring break with some residual post-spring break.

I second the Irving House.
