Visiting Harvard

I'm visiting Cambridge during the first week of January, because I'm not gonna be able to make admitted students weekend(Coachella!)... Any advice? What should I see, where should I stay?

hey modestmouse,

i went in october to visit, since that was after i visited wellesley. boston and cambridge are really nice places, so i would say enjoy both of them and just walk around and soak in the feeling. where would you stay... um, there's a marriott, i think, but i'm sure there are cheaper places.

i recommend seeing quincy market, but i recommend everything, as i'm completely biased and i love the whole area. i'm not sure if this is specific enough to help you though.

i recommend staying in a freshman dorm or a house at harvard
if you call the admissions office they will be more than happy to accomodate you

things to do

walk the freedom trail

take a duck tour

go to the top of the Prudential building

walk in the Boston Commons

skate at the Frog Pond in the Boston Commons

go to Quincy Market

watch improv in South Shore

but spend the majority of your time visiting harvard and the such.

At Harvard look inside the Freshman dorms and the Houses. Normal tours don't give you this opportunity. The Peabody, Sackler and Fogg museums are worth seeing too. What are your academic interests?

try to do an overnight in a freshman dorm, if possible. It may not be because Harvard students have final exams in January.

There are no classes in January. I believe exams begin in mid-January. It would be far better to postpone until February.

Ahhhh! Coachella? I'm so jealous, who's playing this year? Also upset we won't be able to swap CDs on admitted students weekend.

Eat some pizza @ Noch's. See if you can sit in on an intro to Psych class (so interesting!).

eat at Mrs. Bartley's across the street.

Go to Casablanca on Brattle Street and have a Turkish coffee. Also--if you like shopping!--go to Jasmine Sola across the street.

Oh, and go to the Coop.

(So jealous! I love Cambridge! Oh well, I'll be there soon enough...and for four glorious years!!!)

Is one allowed to minor at Harvard?

nope, all you do is concentrate (major)
but you are allowed to combine concentrations if you can write a thesis connecting the two

get a quesadilla at Felipe's in the Garage

definitely visit Schoenhof's Foreign Books!

nocciola ice cream at toscanini's....you won't regret spending 3-4 bucks on that scoop of sugary goodness.

the coffee shop i work at buys toscanini's ice cream. its been rated the world's best by the NY Times. def. go there.

You are coming during "reading period" prior to exams ... a very quiet time, with no classes ... so bear that in mind. March would be better. But if you must come then, and can afford it, stay either at the Inn At Harvard, or (preferably) the Charles Hotel.

Call admissions to see if tours will be operating then (they may not be.)
